Magnetic Fields 2. Flaming Lips 3. Moby 4. Guided by Voices 5. Tom Waits 6. Superchunk 7. Beth Orton 8. Super Furry Animals 9. Beta Band Strange though, Central Reservation didn't make their list of the 20 albums that mattered in '99, but then again, no one in the artists of the year list had one of the 20 albums that mattered Maybe this list was actually kinda a "runners up" to the artists of the year?.?.?. If anyone's interested in me scanning the pic, let me know. Here is the text from the write-up: (please ignore any typos) At age 29, Beth Orton, the willowy singer/songwriter from Norfolk, England, secured her position as an enigmatic pop personality in full flight. Performing frequently on both sides of the Atlantic in service of her latest album, "Central Reservation," Orton displayed depth and durability in a variety of live settings. A resourceful solo artist who draws from traditional songforms as well as the realm of modern electronica, Orton sings Millennial fold music in a wearied, clubland style. Hardworking and fun-loving, Orton was on the move so much in '99 that she pushed herself to the point of illness and a brief hospitalization (she was diagnosed with Chron's disease)-- only to return to the road for even more touring. While some of Orton's gigs showcased the singer enjoying only a minimal amount of instrumental accompaniment, her studio recordings are elaborate celebrations of creativity and collaboration. Orton's guests on "Central Reservation" included Ben Harper, Dr. John, Everything But the Girl's Ben Watt and Chicago jazz/folk legend Terry Callier. Critically acclaimed and commercially viable, Orton either falls or throws herself into favourable situations with remarkable consistency. "You can look and never find your voice, and then suddenly something will happen," says Orton. "You just have to hope and pray that you find it, then you have to nurture it and protect it...I see music as a parent to me--but then, I'm a parent to it. It's completely reciprocal because we both look after each other." In '99, Orton performed at a Jeff Buckley tribute in NYC and acted in a film by music-video director Steven Hanft (Beck, Elliott Smith, Cure)in Los Angeles; she also appeared on Beck's latest LP, "Midnite Vultures." But as the year came to a close, this gifted woman with the "producer's dream" voice was just biding her time until she records her next hit album.
