Hi, Can I just abuse the vast international networking resources of the Trailer Park mailing list to ask if any of you have caught the Whitlams in the past month and a bit? The Whitlams are Australian and kinda my very very favourite band. They're only recognized here though. But they are in the middle of Canadian tour #2. This time they're getting a lot more press, telly etc. and a lot more people seeing them live because they are supporting a Canadian band Blue Rodeo who have been playing to full theatres. The Whit's have done Montreal, Vancouver, la la la.. and I think they even went over the border and played in Seattle. So has anyone come across them at all yet? I've read Tim Freedman's tour diary on the website (www.thewhitlams.com) and he says he's signing 40-50 CD's a night at the shows... so they're obviously doing something right. The Whitlams are as big as they can be in Australia and I'd love to see them acheive the same kind of success overseas. At least in Canada (US is a bit of a tough ask though, you lot don't even like Jeff Buckley that much! LOL). Australia and Canada seem to have a nice crossover thing happening... We like you, you like us, I mean, just ask the Tea Party! Anyway.. email me privately if you have caught Tim Freedman and the boys somewhere.. "I believe there's a commonality to all humanity... But since my last posts.. I've met Beth, and seen her live! Yay. Thanks to the population of Adelaide they decided a signing tent was a tenable idea at the Big Day Out, hence I got to meet her briefly. Which was really nice. Keith Yap wanted some write ups of reviews so here's two. The Melbourne POW show, which I didn't get to, considering I live a long way from there. However I was drinking there 16 days later. 16 days tooo late! Interesting to hear about the Grapes support. I've seen them twice... one of those shows they played to a captive audience of about 6 people. I thought they were really great, so yeah, if you're in Oz, and they happen to be nearby. See them. Or buy their album! Which is nice too. Beat Magazine: 9th February, 2000 BETH ORTON THE GRAPES Prince of Wales in Melbourne, Australia. Tickets to this show sold out well in advance and there were more than a few dissapointed faces outside the Prince on this particular night. Perhaps it was the charismatic charm Beth Orton had displayed at the Big Day Out the previous day that prompted people to rush to see her again the following night? Who knows, one thing is for sure though, if you missed Beth Orton and The Grapes last Monday you missed a great evening of entertainment. The support slot offered the opportunity for locals The Grapes to play to a packed venue, which was good to see. Fronted by Sherry Rich (a little country) and Ashley Naylor (a little bit rock and roll), The Grapes kept everyone amply entertained until Ms Orton graced the stage, and they did a good job with their brand of up-beat jangley twang. If you like you music happy, poppy with lots of tambourine and showing just a hint of influence from the Country and Western genre, then be sure to check out the Grapes, you won't be dissapointed. Soon enough it was time for Ms Orton, but first let it be said that this gig was more than half filled by very affectionate couples, not at all ashamed to indulge in public displays of affection, such is the make up of the average Beth Orton fan me thinks. Beth Orton took to the stage with her four-piece band, which included a double bassist, to create a show which was on of the most vocally driven I've seen fro some time. I was interested to see if Beth live was as good as Beth on CD and the answer to that question is yes. Perhaps she was even more bewitching. This woman has a voice that can soar then drop to a whisper. It can be stripped back and honestly raw, or fine and delicate. At this stage in the review I'd just like to send out a special thank you to the particularly amorous fellow who proceeded to serenade his beloved along with Beth Orton, much to the displeasure of myself and about 30 others in his immediate vicinity. Thank you for sharing, but next time, don't. All in all, the show went for well over an hour with Orton showing neither a sign of fatigue nor a good joke (her jokes were just plain BAD but none less endearing). Her Central Reservation album was more than amply show cased in this gig. Along with a few 'hits' as it were, from 1997's Trailer Park. One particularly enchanting and memorable moment was the amazingly delivered stripped back version of 'Galaxy of Emptiness'. If you missed this show last week, I'm sorry. If you ever get a chane to see Beth Orton again, purchase a ticket well in advance, she's more than worth it. EMMA RAPHAEL Then my little review, not in Beat Mag, just made it up now. BETH ORTON, BIG DAY OUT, ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA Beth was set to take to the Green stage at 3.15pm on what was luckily an overcast day, saving us from an expected 42 degrees (celcius) that was predicted. However, it was still a hot introduction to Adelaide for Ms Orton. The perspex dome that covered the lane the Green stage was situated prompted Beth to compare the audience to "greenhouse tomatoes". I looked at her band and thought, uh huh, bass guy, Ted Barnes, and drummer (my god, he played with Jeff Buckley!). At the microphone was the graceful figure that is Beth Orton with her acoustic guitar. She opened with a stunning version of 'galaxy of emptiness', fortunately it's a lengthy song, which gives you some time to take it all in, time to absorb that fact that Beth Orton is no longer on your CD player at home, that she is actually performing before your eyes and ears. Some male members of the audience found the only way of dealing with this reality was to yell out "WE LOVE YOU BETH". Which Beth received with an "umm yeah thanks" type response. She floated through her beguiling set with effortlessness with songs such as 'pass in time', 'best bits', 'stolen car', 'she cries your name', 'someone's daughter'. At one point some of the audience tried to alleviate heat concerns by throwing water at the stage and at Beth. Which caused roadies to fly in from everywhere concerned at the combination of water and electricity. We don't want Beth zapped do we? She also played one new song in her set. The 8 song, 45 minute set finished with Beth, sans guitar, doing 'touch me with your love' in a style more true to the Best Bits EP version than the album version. Seeing Beth Orton perform live, you finally know what the well worn cliche of 'playing from your heart' really means. The worst bit of seeing her live is the inevitability that it has to end, and end so soon! It's like, here's heaven, wander around in it, frolic in the clouds, no, you've had enough now, time to come down. I don't wanna come down! I did eventually, and wandered over to another stage to see some damn fine Oz rock from the fabulous Jebediah. But I still remember that cloud fondly. PETER F.
