All their CDs are great, but I think "Rhythm and Jews" or "Jews with Horns" are the best introductions. >FRANK LONDON'S KLEZMER BRASS ALL-STARS (straight-up brass! >http://www.piranha.de ) I can't wait to hear this one. » SNZ listeners might also like the "New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars. They're hot, they're fast, but they don't sing much, if that matters to you. » Listen to "Square Dance Messiah" by Hypnotic Clambake for a warped klezmer-jam-bluegrass sensibility. » For old SNZ-like fun, the main desert island record for me in the last six months would have to be "Iguana Iguana" by The Reptile Palace Orchestra. » Moxy Fruvous, if you haven't heard them, is great sounding fun. "Bargainville" or "Live Noise" would both be good starting places. » Love Duke Heitger's trumpet on "Hot" and "Samsara"? Grab a listen to his recording "Rhythm is our Business" It may be too smooth for those who like their music rough around the edges, but man is it fine. May I also mention, for those who may want to share more either on or off list, Goran Bregovic, 3 Mustaphas 3, Brave Combo, 8-1/2 Souvenirs, Paris Combo, Fatal Mambo, Los Lobos, The Hot Club of Cowtown, and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Yipes, that's a whole lotta fun! B. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 18:17:46 GMT From: "Trent Jerome" Subject: Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! OK, I knew I liked klezmer influence music, but I didn't realize how much till our kind listmember kindly gave us some suggestions. I first went to www.jewishmusic.com and found "The Klezmer Violin" by Yehoshua Rochman. Wow!!! I LOVE IT!!! If you like Andrew Bird, check this guy out, too!! That sure is one way to feel good in the midst of so many reasons to feel blue! (I about threw up when I read the zippers are playing for the Gore thing--sorry all you democrats out there. Don't mean to start any flames, so please don't) SOOOO, in short, LISTEN TO KLEZMER!!! It will make you feel happier (Or even more sad if you find some great sad klezmer =) I'm so glad I took up this guy's suggstion (Sorry, I forgot your name). I listened to YR at Tara Publications's booth at the CAJE ( www.caje.org ) Exposition... turned on the headphones and started screaming in musical ecstacy! It's amazing stuff. It's a book-CD, with articles and interviews and histories, and at the back is a compilation CD with all the best groups we've been talking about. It has the trombonist from SHIRIM / NAFTULE'S DREAM, I think... (SHIRIM is a straight-up ensemble and NAFTULE'S DREAM is a whacked-out klezjazz band -- it's the same people though. Highly highly recommended. The trombonist is the bomb! Available at jewishmusic.com) >SNZ listeners might also like the "New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars."
