I noticed not many people seemed to post about it, so if any of you didn't know, it's out. I have mixed feelings about it. I definitely like it by itself, but in comparison to the other CD, it has its strong and weak points. I think the vocals and lyrics on the first CD were a little more abundant than here, but the lyrics here are still fun. There are also some hilarious spoken word songs from Kevin. THere are now two sax players instead of a bone player.. which to me, isn't that cool. But what can you do? overall, it's decent and I recommend y'all get yer little credit cards out or to the local record shops and order it up. They could use the support. Speaking of which, I have been informed that the Bowl of Fire has just about had it with the touring and lack of crowds... which means... you all know what it means. So get yourself to a show and bring friends, whether they like them or not. Otherwise, you won't be seeing them period. For those of you in RI, set dates for October 28th... it has been two years to the date, but the Zippers will be back at Lupos. Whee :-) From what I have heard from Je's mother-in-law and her friend, the new CD does not have that raw sound that Tom and Ken brought.. it is more "refined." We'll see. Could be a bad thing. Discuss. That's all... I have yet to see the new form, but having heard Samsara (about a hundred times) I have a pretty good idea of what Tom and Ken took with them when they left. IMO one of the main losses is the spontaneous horn arrangements. You may recall Jimbo's post from some time ago about their horn arrangements being stolen at a gig... well in the "old" SNZ there _were_ no horn arrangements, and believe me I asked! So someone transcribed all of the sax licks (at least) and probably the bone and perhaps trumpet too for the new guys to work from. A step toward being more refined perhaps. I'd also qualify as "more refined" the Duke Heitger CD "Rhythm Is Our Business". It's great stuff and Duke as always blows the lid off of the place, but it lacks that raw Fats Waller kind of sound that was preserved so well on Samsara. I will certainly buy the new SNZ CD, and continue to follow Jim Mathus - his work on the Knockdown Society CD certainly qualifies as raw to the bone... but it seems like what really drew me to the band from day one was the voices of Tom & Kens saxes, Tom's vocal chords, and Duke's trumpet. I really hope Tom can do another CD with much of the same personnel, in particular Duke and Julius McKee who added a flavor to the combo that SNZ never experienced - other than jamming with DD on stage. Very similar, sometimes though Tom was better. I have only seen new SNZ on Regis, etc. and heard live mp3's. Since the quality was not that great, I cannot make a total judgement, but I think the new t-bone and piano make the old songs sound too cluttered. I will know for sure soon. - -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 17:46:16 -0400 From: Koby the Interactive Bear Subject: Re: Control Freak On Fri, 15 Sep 2000 10:09:22 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: > Speaking as one who's seen both incarnations of the >band (with Tom and Ken and without) I have to say that >the latter sounded more refined in a live venue >anyway.
