I still think that 95% of Napster users are not buying as many CDs as they used to (why spend $17 on Britney Spear's new CD when you can have the one overproduced single for free?). Anyway, the way I see it, a good 75-90% of music out there today is crap, and only makes it on big record sales in the first 6 months of release. Then they die. Wow, whatever the hell happened to Will Smith? So if we can get all this poppy music for free, these fakers will never even make it. If this is the case, only real musicians will make it through hard work and touring. I hate to exemplify a band I'm sure none of you like, but Phish is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. They're great musicians, they started playing in bars, and 17 years later are playing in front of 75000 on New Years Eve. They've never gotten hype or publicity, well, until now since they deserve it! But can you imagine what the music scene would be like if to be successful everyone had to actually be a good musician and just play live all the time? oh man... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 07:10:29 PDT From: "David Shreffler" Subject: Re: the-landing-digest V3 #112 I personally feel that this Napster 'vicory' is only the tip of the iceberg, that there are so many more ways copyright laws are beig broke every second. Hey,g lad to see veryone is alive and aware out there. Thanks Laura for your posts about BOF shows. Also, feel free to continue a Napster conversaiton if you guys want to. there's nothing else going on here... i did see Tom in Cleveland a few weeks ago and I probably said I would write about it but i just don't have time. The show rocked my socks off and the crowd was tiny despite the amazing publicity i gave it. unfortunately the club owner forgot to publicize it, and they almost cancelled but Kenny said "no way!" Here's some bad pics i took, though: http://www.jjbrandt.com/stuff/tomshow/index.html if i find a copy of the tape my brother made, i will try to burn some copies for all that want them. maybe even free this time. One more huge favor. Anyone know tabs, lyrics, or chords for BOF's "Candy Shop"? Someone I know is dying to learn it. I know a lot of you guys are musically inclined, so someone must be playing andrew's stuff! Lemme know if you find anything. But can you imagine what the music scene would be >like if to be successful everyone had to actually be a good musician and just >play live all the time? oh man... That's a nice fantasy, but of course it'll never work. Will Smith or Britney has more money right now than probably everyone in SNZ will make in his entire music career. Even if their music sucks, they have a right to sell it and make money. BTW, there's a used CD place by my dad in Pittsburgh that had BS and WS both in the 50-cent section. Their older albums. This shows that people who buy into the latest craze are *not* doing so for the music; they're actually just doing it to fit in and/or be cool. I like Phish. But I wish they weren't so popular. That's what's so cool about most bands I like -- for example, SNZ! Fewer fans make for much more personal relationship between the band and the fans. I wonder how many Phish fans have met the band? I feel the same way about Beck. Too popular! For that matter -- I wonder how many of us have met SNZ? I know I have. My first SNZ concert was in Hartford, CT. I met Ken, Tom, Chris & Stu before the show -- I just had to walk around behind the building! Tom was cool. I bought a disposable camera (we hadn't brought one!) and got my pic with Tom and Ken, which is cool because they quit since then. I have autographs, too, of course. There were only a few hundred people there during the concert and a little room for dancing on the floor with seats behind. Very cool. - - Peter, commander and the leader "Well you can't very well expect a group of people who would rather read than watch an animated movie to have an excellent sense of logic, now do you?" - Serack "There must be a lot of money in mutant education." - my dad "Concrete...hard concrete." - MadiHolmes http://www.geocities.com/pdestructo - Rare Cartoon Network MP3s ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 14:30:30 -0400 From: "Koby C." Copyright laws were always having problems. Ever been to school? That's one huge example. (Teachers xeroxing from books.) The problem today is that digital technology makes possible *perfect* copies. Unlike a tape of a tape, a CD-R copy of Windows 98 won't have background fuzz. Are y'all following the deCSS trial? deCSS breaks the encryption of DVDs so people can, among other things, skip the ads, view on unauthorized platforms and without official players, and create AVI files from the DVD. But the other side says that DVD copying was already happening without deCSS and -- well, read about it at www.2600.com .
