I was at the one at Joe's Pub earlier this month, on the first night of 3. I'm not really good at describing shows other than saying it was great! So, needless to say, it was great! They played for 90 minutes and the whole bunch of them were witty and funny in between songs. Robert looked his usual self and played an upright bass as well as a regular bass for one song. They had a gospel quartet for a few songs and a woman whose name I do not recall to sing the Katherine parts of some Squirrel Nut Zippers songs. I took a couple of pictures so if anyone is interested in seeing them, let me know. lisa - --------------------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 00:01:00 -0400 From: "Leigh 13" Subject: Re: Robert w/minor drag > From: Jessica Brandt > Subject: Robert w/minor drag > > Did anyone catch any of the Tom Maxwell & Minor Drag shows with robert in > the band? I'm interested in hearing your opinions of the show. I was never a big Squirrel Nut Zippers fan, even though I caught their live show once at Roseland back in 1997. Tom Maxwell wouldn't have grabbed my attention if he weren't touring with Robert Sledge, aided by the inimitable Joe Delorenzo on his crew. But he did have his little portion of BFF camp with him, so JB and I decided to sit in on Maxwell's Friday night gig at Joe's Pub in NYC. The Pub has to be one of the greatest venues I've ever had the pleasure of entering. The sound and lighting there were phenomenal, but were outdone by the most lavish and comfortable concert seating I've ever experienced. We sat ten feet from the stage on cushy wraparound couches, obstructed only by the knee-high tables which held our food and drinks. I thought Tom and his band were terrific. Each of the soloists (Ken Mosher and the trumpet player, especially) wailed away to no end, yet sat back when the time came to work the harmonies. Heck, several times during the show, band members would get up and leave the stage if they weren't playing! Rob appeared slightly less confident on upright bass than he does on electric, but he still held down the bottom end with authority. I think his bowing could use some work though--looked like it had been awhile since he'd had to dig into the arco for Brick! Twice during the 90-minute set, Maxwell and the Minor Drag were joined by a gospel choir that really brought the house down. These four guys had voices like you wouldn't believe, and just added a totally unexpected element to an otherwise straightforward hot jazz/swing set. Well, maybe it wasn't exactly straightforward, but you get my point. JB and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Maxwell before the show. It was the second time for me, after an Irving Plaza encounter over a year ago where Tom was decked out in full Reinhold Messner garb. I give the guy credit for being a real class act--a nice guy all around and an amazing guitarist who just happens to play sax as well. Or is he an amazing sax player who just happens to play guitar? All in all, I came away from the show highly impressed with Tom Maxwell and the Minor Drag. Even though the style isn't really one I'm into, the band put on such a solid set that I didn't feel bored for a second. I highly recommend checking them out if you have the opportunity. - - - Leigh 13 - ------------------------ *********************************************************** * --+-READ THE SHRUBBERY-+-- * http://www.theshrubbery.com --New Every Month- -Humor, Music, News and More-- *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 00:22:55 -0400 From: Jessica Brandt Subject: new tom dates, NPR interview Here's some new dates: Thu 07/06/00 Columbia, MO Blue Note Fri 07/07/00 St. Louis, MO Blueberry Hill Sat 07/08/00 Chicago, IL Schuba's Mon 07/10/00 Cleveland, OH Euclid Tavern Wed 07/12/00 Asheville, NC Grey Eagle Thu 07/13/00 Nashville, TN Dancing In The District Fri 07/14/00 Memphis, TN Hi-Tone Sat 07/15/00 Chattanooga, TN Southside On Saturday Sun 07/16/00 Charlotte, NC Visulite Theatre Thu 07/20/00 Atlanta, GA The Brandyhouse Fri 07/21/00 Athens, GA Athens Music Factory Sat 07/22/00 Charleston, SC Cumberland's Sun 07/23/00 Garden City, SC Sandstone's I know Andy had a question about Schuba's...if Larissa sees this email, she might be able to tell you.
