I told Jess, and she suggested that I post to y'all about it. So this was my experience over three nights: The Towers, Narragansett RI: The previous night was a real flop for the band, they said only 2 people actually showed up to see the band. So they were pretty pumped when a good amount of people showed up at the Towers. This night was the best out of all of them, the band/audience rapport was great. The band consisted of: Tom, guitar, tenor, bari, alto sax. Ken: Guitar, alto/bari. David Roof: Trumpet, Guitar. Rob Sledge, bass. Holly, vocals. Tom L. on piano, and Chris P. on drums. The setlist for all three nights was: Indicatif- recorded version was played at the start of every show as a means to call the band on stage. Hell ("you get what you paid for!!") Soon 6's and 7's to me ("y'all") The Next Big Thing ("a song about transient fads and trends... ok, it's really about getting laid"). Put a Lid on it- (for those of you who haven't heard Holly sing songs Katherine used to, you must. What a voice, I'm in love). If I Had You The Kraken Uptown Stomp Don't Give me the Runaround ("a song about my former record label"). Can't Sleep Pallin' With Al You Always Get What's Coming (incredible with full instrumentation. Featured Kenny on guitar, David Roof on trumpet, and Robert Sledge on bass). Club Limbo Meant to Be Samsara Caveat Emptor ("the only thing to do after a song like 'Samsara' is play a song that makes absolutely no sense.. AND HERE IT IS!"). Not Christmas (don't know if it was a typo, but that's how it was written on the set list). Nobody Likes You You Rascal You Roll Them Bones ("a song about a friend who passed.. but he wouldn't want that to stop me from shaking my ass."). Plenty More At the Towers show, we also got to hear Holly sing "Some Born Singing" a capella, and for those of you who did not like the recorded version, you would like this one. She sounded so great. I love her. Everyone wanted an encore, and Tom was like "uh, the band doesn't know anymore material.. but I guess I can whip something out." Then he made a speech about how much he missed his wife, getting a little teary eyed, and said "it's great to be out here, but it's even better coming back," and he did "My Evergreen" with just him on the guitar. The vibe was just great. Folks were up and dancing, wooping and hollering, and it was just a hell of a blast. Tom was supposed to meet us across the street for drinks, but he ended up coming in to say goodnight, and go to bed. The Met Cafe, Providence, RI: Their second to worst show. The sound was horrible, the venue sucked, the crowd was small and dead, and it was very evident they did not want to be there. The band played for less than an hour, and packed right up. The worst part about it was, no one called them back for an encore. Though I don't think they would have played one anyway. The instruments were kinda out of tune. Kenny's guitar was too loud, and the mic fell right into his sax during his solo in Hell. During the Kraken, Holly went to hand Robert his bow, and he dropped it. It was just a rough night all around. The House of Blues, Cambridge, MA: What a night. A great crowd, great sound, and the last night of the tour. Holly dedicated "Samsara" to all of the band members, and thanks Tom with a hug and little peck on the cheek for "the best two weeks of her life." She's an absolute doll. One of the trombone players from “The Hot Tamale Band,” and kickass dixieland group, sat in for “You Rascal You.” Tom was so excited. There was some downtime after the show, and Dave Roof let me go upstairs to talk with the band. I talked to Kenny and Holly (who is just wonderful) for a while. She gave me a copy of the “official” release of Samsara, so I could have both that and the limited edition. I started talking to Tom about music, and eventually led to my own debut album. He told me to keep in touch, and send him anything I got on record!! I was very honored by that. I went to say goodbye, and said "when I finally get my shit together and get into the studio," he said “send it right on dow! n. I’d love to hear it. When are you making that run?” I was taken aback… unfortunately, that won’t be for the next year or two. He also gave me permission to put his pics on my website, and got the band together (minus Chris, who was packing the bus) for a pic. He said it was just under one condition: I send him a link. It was really great, and they were very appreciative of the support. I will miss them all, especially Holly. By the way, guys, Holly is really cute. I love her. Did I tell any of you that I love Holly? Cuz I do. (joke.. joking). Not really. I got a little bit of info. on their plans. They are going to tour Samsara until next spring or so, or “see what we can do with the first record” according to Holly, and depending on how much money they have, Tom will start their second album. So they will be back around the northeast, though Tom wants to do west coast for a while. He also said for anybody looking for his album in stores, try Tower, Newburry Comics, etc. I have seen it here and there. I think that's it. I don't know really what else to say, but if anyone has any questions, post em. - -Mike ------------------------------ End of the-landing-digest V3 #98 ********************************
