You were 24 hours away from being un-subbed :) Kat didn't have the baby, we're just debating on how much we should all contribute to the "Flowers for Kat and Jim When The Baby Comes" fund. I think we've agreed on $3/each. Eric: " And despite what some people may think, it doesn't take a genius to figure out music theory (even Jazz). ;^)" LIAR!!! Theory is harder than math ;) (and math is pretty damn hard!) I'm always wary of buying something because it can easily sound like crap, so any suggestions you could make would be appreciated! Welcome to the list! Hi Eric, Andrew's fiddle playing, as featured in an NPR radio story, is what originally attracted me to BOF, then SNZ, then klezmer, &c, &c. I would be very interested in hearing some of your recommendations, as I bet would other folks on this list. So what's hot? Great CD. The SNZ track is incredible too....crazy to think they never recorded a studio track of that (That I know of, at least...) Oh well. And talent has everything to do with it, some or born with it and some practice their way into it. Just because its simple doesn't mean it comes from a untalented person, they were able to take something very fundamental and make it swing. "A lot of people don't really know what jazz is. Some people have said they don't like it, but it takes time for them to hear jazz. If you've had a steady diet of the most commercial things available, it's generally difficult for you to like anything that's not commercial. It's as if you eat dessert all the time: you're not going to want to eat real food! Now if you're eating real food, you don't mind eating a little dessert!" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Apr 2000 23:56:08 PST From: "Eric Thompson" Subject: Hungarian Gypsy Fiddle Music Okay, cool. I'm glad to hear some people are interested in my music. I have an FTP site that I do my best to keep up all the time: IP: 24.15.235.205 Port: 21 and you all can use ID: bird; and PW: hair My first recommendation: a CD that I am putting up now for you all to give a listen to is May I Kiss Your Hand, by Csokolom. I hope you enjoy it. It is a group that usually consists of two violinists and an acoustic bass player, with occasional vocals by the main lady, Anti von Klewitz. If the FTP site doesn't work, let me know and I'll fix it. Lulu-Valse has some beautiful violin work, check it out! But I love all the songs, so.... If you only listen to ONE of the songs off of the CD, I would have to say listen to ALL of #7 Szerelem/Lorincreve :-) I may only have time to put up some of the songs... but I eventurally plan to have all 20 songs for your enjoyment in mp3 format. This music may not be for everyone, but I like it, and so some of you may like it too. Let me know what you think. Jess, in regards to my statement about music theory: I do not find music theory to be difficult, nor do I find math to be difficult. It's just always been something that's been easy for me, and I guess that just is the way my mind works or something. And what I've always lacked in my music is creativity. I can play all the sheet music in the world, but I can't improve worth a damn. That is probably why I respect people that can do the things that I've never been able to do, like put lots of feeling and expression into music and not just play the notes on the page, or play seemingly random (but in key) notes really fast. Oh, has anyone heard of the Hot Club of Cowtown? I found theird CD used for really cheap in a record store, and I was really surprised by how cool it was. It's an interesting blend of jass and bluegrass! Well, I'm about to fall asleap: the NyQuil is kicking in... Good night, or day depending on when you read this message. - -- Eric ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of the-landing-digest V3 #52 ********************************
