But i managed to drag myself out of bed long enough to see the Big Barn dance, featuring The Chicken Wire Gang (Stu Cole, Tony Mayer, Ted Zaras, Greg Bell), Countdown Quartet, and Hobex. Chicken Wire...hmm...Hokey country, if anything. Greg Bell is a really great piano player, AND accordian player. Stu isn't too bad at guitar, either. It was really weird to see him fronting a country band, tho. i guess that's cool if that's where he started, but i have never seen him "out of context." Countdown Quartet was awesome as usual. I'm thoroughly convinced that Tim Smith is the coolest member of SNZ now. He blows a mean sax, AND flute, AND is a really kickass dancer. I didn't see but 1.5 songs of Hobex. They were groovin' as usual. Their sound went out, tho.....D'OH!! Other interesting things...Jim was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I've got a flyer from the show with a nice promo picture of Jim and his guitar. it says "Jimbo Mathus says 'y'all come!'".. pretty hokey. The whole atmosphere was weird...it was like a barn dance i guess, i ain't never been to one. i thought it was more like a hillbilly family reunion :) It was billed as a family event, so there were a LOT of kids there. it was cool to see people dance, tho!! Katherine was there, and so was her mom. her mom looks like a grey-haired version of her. Kat is 8 months pregnant and LOOKS it. she's got a huge belly :) For some reason, she was wearing a short, tight lime-green dress. she looked pretty creepy. But, whatever...And the "Hawkeye" guy from the Knockdown Society album was there...how do i know? he is an old guy with an eye patch! WOO!!! okay, sorry y'all had to miss it. wish you coulda come! I got their address last week (oh yeah. forgot to mention i drove by their house. It's a little country place out in the middle of NOWHERE. Jim has like 6 cars...most of them nice old old old ones. and they've got a bus. hmm.) Anyway, the way the Ben Folds Five list did it when Ben's wife had the twins was the list owner (who had the address) asked for a $1 donation from anyone who wanted to donate, and then he used an online flower shop and got the biggest bouquet he could for the $$ he had. For one thing, we have about 10% of the subscribers the BFF list has. I was thinking that to get this right, at least $2 should cover it. I will NOT accept larger donations, in all fairness. Now, if we decide as a group to up the donation price, that's cool. I was also thinking that since the list is so small, everyone can send a card with their $$ if they wish, and i can put the cards in one package and send it along. That might be more 'bang for your buck" than me just buying a card and making a list of all the people who contributed. Let's 'talk" about this for a week, to let me know who's interested, and we can decide as a group how much everyone should pay. you might want to check out http://www.ftd.com/pages/baby_1.html for some bouquet ideas. I'm open to suggestions. Looks like everything they have is gonna cost us at least $50 (i think we've got about 130 subscribers...but who knows who's interested in helping out...) Once we get it settled, i'll start collecting donations and keeping a chart of how much we get. let's shoot for everything being in by April 20, okay? give me some feedback and some ideas!
