Any other Cake fans out there? [nod]!! Fashion Nugget is my favourite, and I'd have to agree Frank Sinatra is fantastic. Probably my favourite off the album. :o) I also have "Prolonging the Magic" and the single from that "Never There". There are some good songs on it, but Fashion Nugget is way better. Pen. :o) PS - When are SNZ coming to Australia??? :o) :o) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 19:57:41 -0500 From: Jessica Brandt Subject: re: today's music You have to remember that it's not the "musicians" (and i use that term loosely) who are buying and propigating this music, but it's the American public. People like the Backstreet boys because they were marketed well and know what buttons to push. They aren't creative geniuses but they sure do put on a show (according to my mom.) Americans eat this up. People want stuff they don't HAVE to analyze or think about. Americans are largely simple people, and largely like simple things. You can see it everything-- Why was newsradio cancelled while "two guys and a girl" is still on? The latter is simpler. Why is AOL annoying yet more popular than local ISPs or other connection options? Because it's simpler (and marketed well). Why do people pay $7 to see Wild Wild West while $4 arthouse movies go unseen? Simpler!!! You all have to admit that you do/like SOME things because of their simplicity. I was heavy into NIN and all that "dark stuff" until i decided my brain needed a break. I got into ska because there was no strings attached. All the songs have the same rhythm, some good horn riffs, and lyrics about nothing. Absolutely perfect for unwinding and not thinking about the music. It's easy to talk about the "other" people, because it's pretty obvious that everyone on this list, anyone who even bothers to listen to and apreciate SNZ is already a step above those who PURELY listen to top-40 pop, because they've taken a mature view of music to see that there's stuff beyond. But just remember...probably about 75% of the general american public doesn't want any strings attached with their music. just dumb entertainment. hmm i wish i wasn't interrupted so much by my mom when i was writing. my stuff would be much more coherent!
