I did leave, and I came back mainly to try and get news of Tom's possible future gigs firsthand (can you tell I'm on the Tom/Ken side of the split?). Re. the split.... I saw it coming in Sept '98. And I saw some other stuff too, that's pretty hard to mistake, and no I'm not going to talk about it. It will eventually come out. There are two things that split up successful bands, and both are at work here. However, I don't agree that the band members are under any obligation to talk about it, nor are our judgements about who pissed on whose shoes relevant. It happened, it's done, and finding someone to blame will not fix it back the way it was. Besides, whats to blame is not a "someone" anyway. I heard Jim's pure form on the KDS album, and it's also evident on "Roasted Right" particularly "My Little Mother In Law" which I absolutely love. I'm glad that we also finally got to hear Tom's pure form, because it kicks major ass. I will certainly miss Tom's influence on SNZ, but maybe what is yet to come is better still. To me, Samsara has more in common with HOT than Perrenial Faves has with HOT; if the new SNZ album is like PF it will be good but a lateral release. If it's like Inevitable, it will be a throwback and good stuff. If it's totally different, hey - might be really cool if everybody doesn't freak out that it's different. It won't be like HOT, that I'm sure of. I was talking to a friend yesterday about the possible folding of mammoth, and mentioned that the Zippers may not have a label for a while. But just watching them on Regis and Kathy Lee that day, they sound kinda different, and just don't seem to be the same band anymore. And obviously, they are not. I know band members come and go, but someone like Tom is not a disappearance that can just be dismissed. And it is too bad that even though he left, Tom does not have Jimbo's "blessing." If I recall correctly, Jim was a nice guy, but seemed more interested in drinking than signing autographs at the Zippers show I went to, meanwhile Tom and his Dad were talking with me about all sorts of stuff. I hope Tom makes it... he wrote a lot of kick ass tunes for the Zippers, and some really cool new ones. As for the Zippers, I guess I'll just have to hear the new album to make a decision on who my loyalty goes to. Right now, it's Tom, and the Bowl of Fire is above the Zippers on my list. - -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 08:57:48 -0800 (PST) From: edward eichelberger Subject: choosing up sides I don't understand why everyone is trying to decide with which "camp" they want to affiliate themselves. It's like the argument over who was better; Curly or Shemp. You got your Curly camp and you got your Shemp camp. The Curly camp doesn't like Shemp because they think he was a poor replacement for Curly and the Shemp camp thinks Shemp is just as good as Curly, because they understand that Shemp was in the act before Curly was. But this particular situation reminds me more (as I'm sure it will the other older members of the group) of the whole Van Halen/David Lee Roth debacle. The popular (or should I say cool) way to go at the time was to be in David's "camp". But look where he ended up. He had a couple of hits in the mid-eighties and that was it. Whereas Van Halen went on to their usual success with Sammy Hagar right up into the very early nineties when all the rest of the glam rock bands fell off the face of the earth. Speaking as a person who's seen both incarnations of the band (I'm back on topic now, in case you're confused) I would have to say that I enjoyed the latter version of the Zippers more so than I did than when they still had Tom and Ken (regardless of the fact that Hobex opened for them both times). I'm not saying that I won't miss Tom and Ken. It definitely won't be the same without them. What I am saying is that it just seems like a lot of people are ready to write the new band off (or just put them lower on their list) when they haven't even put out an album just because of the defection of Tom and Ken. I think it would be a good idea to wait and see what happens with the new Zippers and then decide where your loyalties lie. In reference to what I said earlier about Holly's vocals on Samsara, I would have to say that upon further reflection I decided that her voice was right for Some Born Singing and Samsara. I think, however, that it wasn't the best choice for If I Had You. I'd like to reiterate that I don't think she did a bad job. I just don't feel her vocal style was quite right for it. But that is just my opinion and you can disregard me for a disenchanted malcontent if the fancy strikes you. Thank you... - --- BlowRedBlow@aol.com wrote: > I guess this is a hot topic, and I unfortunately > have not been able to talk > to anybody about it (ie insiders like Bird, Tom > himself, or Ken).
