Second of all...is there anyone out there that wasn't crazy about Holly's singing on Samsara? I'm not sure if I'm unfairly comparing her to Katharine (a tough act to follow), but I think she didn't have the right sound for what she was singing. I've never heard her anywhere else, so I won't say she's a bad singer, but I just don't think she quite fit here. But that's only my opinion and I was wondering if anyone else felt the same. In my opinion, she has a good, light voice for "Samsara." It gives the song a good effect... however, I do not considered "Some Born Singing" to be a pleasureable listening experience... different, though. - -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 16:28:58 -0500 From: Koby the Interactive Bear Subject: OT: DAMN funny trombone site This is for you, Jess... I am very excited about it! Not only will it have cool songs and be a charity albumm, but there's a NEW, URELEASED snz song! if you don't know what i'm talking about, go to www.vintageparts.com/summer OR read this: SONGS FOR SUMMER Release date: March 21st Songs For Summer (Summer's House of Cookies Records/Oglio Entertainment) is one of the most unique "tribute" charity albums ever.  It features some of the favorite musicians of Summer Brannin, a 21 year old cancer victim from San Diego. The record was put together by her boyfriend, Adam Gimbel, who personally contacted all of the artists who ended up on the record. A portion of the proceeds will go to Los Angeles based charity Free Arts For Abused Children. All of the artists agreed to donate 100% of their normal fees for the project. The album features new, rare, and classic tracks by Ben Folds Five, Soul Coughing, Squirrel Nut Zippers, The B-52's, G Love, Jonathan Richman, and many other great musicians. Summer Brannin was a young, healthy, beautiful, hilarious, talented girl. She grew up in Cardiff, California and spent her adult years working full time at health food stores while going to college full time in San Diego. At the age of 21, she was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She died just seven weeks after she was first admitted to the hospital for testing. A few months after she passed away, Summer's friend Mike Byer from Oglio Records suggested the idea of putting together a charity record with her in mind.  It was a wonderful idea since Summer was a big music fan. Because she had planned on studying art therapy, a friend led them to Free Arts For Abused Children, an LA based organization that helps thousands of abused children heal and express themselves through art, music and dance. Almost two years in the making, the record is an impressive collection of some of the music world's most creative acts. The album is filled with great, diverse songs, many of which are unavailable anywhere else. Over half of the songs contain "Summer" in the title, but year-round listening is recommended. Songs For Summer tracklisting: 1. "Where's Summer B?" - Ben Folds Five 2. "Song For Her" - Jason Falkner 3. "True Dreams of Witchita" (live) - Soul Coughing 4. "Indian Summer" - The Jazz Butcher 5. "Brief Candles" - The Posies 6. "Midsummer" - Babacar 7. "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" - Neutral Milk Hotel 8. "All Along The Frying Pan" (live) - Squirrel Nut Zippers 9. "Funky Cold Medina" - The Frank & Walters 10. "Summer" - Beasley 11. "The Summer You Let Your Hair Grow Out" (live) - Pansy Division 12. "Summer of Love" - The B-52's 13. "After The Beach" - Sandycoates 14. "Rhyme For The Summertime" (original demo) - G Love 15. "That Summer Feeling" - Jonathan Richman Record release parties currently being planned for San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. To tell you the truth, I think that her voice sounded more appropriate for the song "Samsara" than Kat would have. Don't get me wrong, I love Kat's voice, but it wasn't right for the song. Holly may not have the best voice, in some of your opinions, musically speaking, but maybe that gives you a sense of the deeper meaning of samsara, the Buddhist term. Besides, just because he used Holly, was that a slap in Mel's face, too? Maybe we really do need to start seeing Tom Maxwell and SNZ as separate entities rather than harshly comparing them. It's just a thought. *~Andrea~* *********************************************************** * --+-READ THE SHRUBBERY-+-- * http://www.theshrubbery.com --New Every Month- -Humor, Music, News and More-- *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 22:39:50 -0500 From: Jessica Brandt Subject: Re: Faustina and Samsara Well i didn't think i'd have to discuss this, but i think i've mulled it over enough to do so rationally... From what i know of Jim and his personality (through close friends of his, or at least fellow musicians who have worked with/under him) and Tom and his personality (through himself and Ken) both are born band leaders. Two band leaders and one band make for an eventual split. I've heard Jim is controlling and if you notice how involved he is in everything Chapel Hill... basically, if Jim hasn't given you a blessing, you go nowhere these days. Jim plays in tons of bands down there (Countdown, Knockdown, SNZ, Sideways Alley, Harmony Four, Jazz Squad, and various other sit-ins) as well as oversees production for a lot of bands.Unfortunately, although the man has a great ear, he doesn't know how to use a board. Oddly enough, jim just bought a church and had it moved to his property to set up a recording studio with all the stuff he got from Kensway. So anyway, you can see there are two camps to the SNZ family- The Jim Camp, which includes the "southern-fried" Chapel Hill music, as well as Kat, Je and Stu. There's the Tom camp, which is he and Ken, and i'm suspecting Chris P. Oddly enough, Chris P and Stu were in both bands. I was urprised to see Stu with Tom, because Stu is very "close" with jim (imagine him hanging onto ol' jim's belt loops, or at least smokin; dope together.) Chris P. is a really sweet guy and probably doesn't mind either Jim or Tom. Je i think is happy to have such a high-profile job and stays with Jim. He also is probably happy to be the "veteran" in the horn section now. From talking to Tom, I've found that he is ALL about the music. He has said so many times. Jim is into the music as well, but it's so old-hat to him that he is also into the business. he also gets most of the recognition and the $$ from it. From Samsara we can see that Tom was full of musical ideas that were being surpressed while he was "under" jim and he had no choice but to pursue other ventures. Ken, being in Tom's camp, couldn't stand the thought of being left behind with Jim. So now Jim is happy...he's got his buddy Dave Wright with him, a trumpet player who doesn't complain, Tim Smith on tenor who just wants to play, little Reese on piano who dare not talk back, his wifey (and she sure is "wifey"), and then a solid rhythm section who couldn't care less who's in charge. Tom's got what he wants...creative control over a gret bunch of musicians and an album that came straight from his own blood and sweat. I believe wholeheartedly that there was a fallout-- maybe it wasn't expressed in a violent manner, but it was obvious these camps had to split. I see great things for SNZ as well as Tom. Tom's only problem is that he has to start from scratch...no label, and he's very wary of the music business now. Also, he doesn't have the support of one of the biggest names in the Chapel Hill area- Jimbo Mathus. This was evident in the poor showing at the raleigh show i attended. He said they had a good showing at the 506 on Feb. 11 but i know the 506-- many people that go there are regulars, and come to see any music on a fridya night. The Cradle show will be a determining factor on whether or not he can make it. However, he's got the support of all the Zippers fans as well as anyone who appreciates good music. But i think tom's drive will get him back up to the status he enjoyed as part of SNZ. So that is Jess's perspective on this whole thing. I've spent many an hour talking on this same subject with my bf's mom, who has seen the complete persona of "jimbo" in action, as a musician. I consider her to be in the "jim camp" and myself in the "tom camp" so we got to discuss it very intently. but remember, this is merely my opinion. Discuss :) Jess *********************************************************** * --+-READ THE SHRUBBERY-+-- * http://www.theshrubbery.com --New Every Month- -Humor, Music, News and More-- *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 20:15:41 -0800 (PST) From: Shaun Smakal Subject: Re: Songs for Summer soul coughing + squirrel nut zippers = KICK ASS!!!! smakal :) _____________________________________________________________ Email Powered by Everyone.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 21:01:14 PST From: "Joshua Edwards" Subject: questioning answers isn't always bad >also keep in mind that Samsara was >recorded before Tom left the band. Also, Tom and Ken are not featured on >Kat's album, nor Jim's KDS. >Not at all. Remember, this album was made months before Tom left, and Ken >left after that. Yeah, i know Samsara was recorded before they left, but i'm sure they didn't just wake up one morning and think, "Hum, I think I'll leave a nationally renowned band today." Obviously they had been thinking about this. Speaking of which, your point that they aren't on Jazz Squad and Rosetta just might be one of the reasons why Jim and Kat aren't on Samsara. I mean i hope it wouldn't be that petty, but you never know, although that would suck if it was all just a glorified pissing contest. Don't get me wrong, i'm not mad at them or anything, they're my favorite band. But with that title of "favorite band" I think that entitles me to question what goes on in the band. I deserve it, we all deserve it. Joshua P.S. It's good to see that you didn't live up to your claims of leaving the list, Andy. I know that was a while ago, but I hadn't noticed anything by you in awhile. Good to have you back. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of the-landing-digest V3 #22 ********************************
