["Ryan Sargent" ] Re: Chris Powell and his Blue Flame's. ["Ryan Sargent" Subject: Samsara Review Hey all; Great review! Thanks to the one who wrote it. Just a few miscelanious comments on Samsara--please noone hate me for my oppinions =) Contrary to what so many people have been saying, I actually like Some Born Singing. Maybe I just find the female Chinese-esque singing beautiful--I don't know, but I do like it. It will take a few more listens for me to really like it, but as of now, it is a good track to me. Does anyone else agree that Can't Sleep is *annoying* (GASP!!) among other descriptions (Such as loud and abnoxious)? Maybe it's just me, and this is certainly not a bash on those who like the song, I just think it's very a very poor song. What do all you others think? And in regards to the singer, Holly, I think she does a very good job. I don't know how to say this right, but I think she's great on Some Born Singing (I actually thought it was a Chinese/Japenese lady), but on other tracks, even though she has a great voice (Like classic 40's singers), she doesn't seem to have free use of it (If that makes any sense). She doesn't seem to be able to carry out her voice, but rather seems to sing in a more short manner. Maybe she's not comfortable singing?..... I don't know. She just has a great voice, but doesn't seem to use it as well as it should be. Anyone else have any insight? I LOVE the sound of 6's and 7's to Me, but the lyrics seem to be "cliche" in a way. Once again, I'm not good at explaining, but it seems that using the phrase "one for the money, 2 for the show, 3 to get ready......" made the lyrics seem (to me) to be strained. The lyrics FIT in the song, but they don't seem to be a good representation of a well written song. Well, that's all I can think of now. I certainly don't want to come off as sounding like I'm bashing Samsara because I'm certainly not. I just think that it could have used some extra work in making it sound better. I would much prefer Hot to Samsara, and think that all the Zippers work (With the exception of their Christmas album) outshine Tom's work, but of course, that is just my opinion. Please feel free to disagree with me (As I'm sure many of you do =) I can't seem to get into the album much. Usually with albums I end of loving, I love them within 3-5 listens of the album, but this one doesn't grab me much. I may have just broken 4 or 5 listens and It just doesn't beg me to listen to it. Well, that's all! I wish I could have sen the SNZ's in NC! It sounds like it was a great show! As I was researching one of my idol's (one of the greatest trumpet players that ever lived, which tragically wasn't long), Clifford Brown, I came across one the first bands he was in "CHRIS POWELL AND HIS BLUE FLAMES". When I got Clifford's CD "The Beginning and the end" I heard two original songs from that band recorded live - "I come from Jamaica" and "Ida Red" (recorded in '52). When I heard I come from Jamaica I was blown away! it sounded like somebody mixed Louis Prima's vocal's with another version of SNZ's "Hell"! Everything from the background instrument's like the maraca's, calve's, and rhythm section, from the guitar solo (just like the one from The Interlocutor), to the trumpet solo played HOT AS HELL like on "Hell". I know they released one album, but I can't seem to find it...but I just wanted to get the word out. They have a really good sample at amazon.com so check it out ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000002ATP/qid=946176373/sr=1-5/102-0762779-8072842 ) Oh yeah, "Ida Red" is really good too! Here's the line-up: CLIFFORD BROWN, trumpet; VANCE WILLSON, alto and tenor sax; DUKE WELLS, piano; EDDIE LAMBERT, guitar; JAMES JOHNSON, bass; OSIE Johnson, drums; CHRIS POWELL, vocal, percussion. And one more thing. I know this is a hard question, but if you had to pick one Zipper song to sum up the whole feeling and spirit of SNZ, what would it be? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Dec 1999 19:04:06 PST From: "Ryan Sargent" Subject: Re: Chris Powell and his Blue Flame's.
