I'm home now. NC was SupaFine. here's a little rundown of the show: they started off in the dark with the "Ghost of Stephen Foster" video playing and they played along with it. it was AWESOME cuz it looked like they were this old-time band playing at a movie house. Jim did a little ad-lib, taking on the character of the old innkeeper.there's a part where the cartoon guy in the video gets scared, and he has "goose bumps" that look like ducks, and the horn section was going "quack quack quack"... very funny. i will get the set list for you soon. the tape is in my car and it is VERY cold here and i don't want to go get it :) They played "Bedlam Ballroom" which was a real cool treat. the new songs sound pretty cool. there's one called "Coconut Island" (or..."On a Coconut Island I want to Be a Castaway With You") which is really sweet. They played one called "Bent out of Shape" which Kat sang...but originally it was that "I'm Sorry" song that Jimbo sang (on his knees!!) in Cleveland last May. i told you guys about it a while ago. While i'm happy it's going to be on the new album (i assume), i think it was better with Jim singing it. There is a calypso song called "don't let the bed bugs bite" which was pretty cool. there was a "indian giver"-like rock'n roll song too. Dave, the new trombone player, is awesome. he's got chops to kill. Je has really gotten better and I think he carries the section. his solos are great and his sound is bigger now!! Tim, the sax player, is pretty cool too. Reese, the piano player, is very funky and his piano adds a lot to the songs, i just think he was mixed too low. they could stand to give him more exposure. One thing that bothered me, tho..and tell me if anyone else noticed this...is that Jim has taken on a new persona- Trying to impersonate a Louis Armstrong singing style. While I love Louis, i think that sound is best left to him, or David Wright (trombone) because that's the way Dave has always sang, and he pulls it off well. For Jim, it seems very fake. I think he is trying to be mor elike dave. their songs now have more of a ragtime feel to them and it sounds weird to me. I really can't compare the old lineup to tthe new band. everything is different w/o Tom. Jim doesn't have the same sort of repoire with the crowd that he did. Jim just kept saying "thank you for coming to our show." Whee. But now we can call the band "SNZ2K" hehe oh!! here is my SPECIAL OFFER: I taped the show. it was just a little hand-held recorder, so there's a lot of crowd noise, but you can still hear the vocals and the horns very well. one or two of the songs are hard to hear clearly, but still audible. Also, they played a new instrumental jam thing at the end, and i lost maybe the last minute or so of it. all the solos are in there, tho. I'd give it a tapers' rating of B. Anyway, i was thinking of what I could do for everyone for a holiday gift, and I really want everyone to hear this tape because we will be withour SNZ for a while, i think. since there are a lot of new songs we won't hear until the new album comes out, i think it's worth it. The only way I can mass-produce copies of this tape in a timely fashion is if whoever wants one sends me a blank tape with a SASE. If you send me a 120-min tape, i can tack on some RARE shit i got from my boyfriend's mom of Katherine in her studio and some Knockdown Society songs that won't be on the album. and if there's room, some Countdown Quartet songs. So here's the deal- Send me a 120-min tape and a self-addressed bubble mailer with 2 stamps on it any time before Jan. 15 and I will send you a tape of the concert, plus the extra goodies. If you don't want the extra goodies, i think a 90-min tape will suffice (but i might have to cut a song off.) my address is: Jessica Brandt 477 Robin Lane Macedonia OH 44056 Don't forget to include a note telling me this is what you want!!! I hope that's a cool holiday gift idea and all... You can email me, telling me you're going to send the blank. that'd be cool. Okay, i'll have a set list soon.
