I have to agree with Andy that Duke's music (though impressive) it does not catch my attention. I also have played his music in Big Band here at college. With the exception of maybe Anitra's Dance, it is not all that exciting. Well written, but it is a taste that I suppose has to be developed. I would take Louis Prima with Sam Butera and the Witnesses over him any day, as well as Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis. There are many people who think Prima is an obnoxious loudmouth (like my mother) and his songs are stupid. OK, so that is an opinion. Leave it at that. Being a jazz musician myself, Ryan, I have to agree with you that jazz is not just music.. to me it is a lifestyle. Not just jazz, but the lounge music of the singers and performers I have mentioned above. I have many times gotten into heated "arguments" over who was better, Bobby Darin or Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin or Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong or Prima, etc. with my Jazz Band director. They should be fun debates... not anything spiteful or malintended. Lately, I have been defending Andrew from my girlfriend, who thinks he is a weirdo psychotic. I don't think so.. I think he is the best. I WILL win this one :-) there's just no hope for my JB director, since he at one point toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has had many dinners with Tony Bennett. - -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 17:18:07 PST From: "Ryan Sargent" Subject: 9:30 club.
