The new guys are awesome. If anyone's wondering they didn't do Hell. Did a hell of a lot of new stuff, though. They had a kick-ass first number, but I don't wanna give it away for anyone who's going to see one of their other shows. If you wanna know more or don't think you'll make it to a show, contact me and I can tell you all about it personally. Eddie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Let me run it down for you, because SNZ is back and better than ever. - --First off, we got there like, an hour early, and was waiting in the lobby, until who walks out, but Chris P. I was like....."Woah....can I have your autograph?" and he was real cool. We took some pictures with his new "thumbs up" (You'll see when I send the picts out. Then while we were standing there waiting, Greg from Hobex walked out and said to me and my two cousins "Watch out, we gotta bring all our shit in now." - --Then, I mooched a tour poster off the window of the TLA. Real cool. Its gunna go up in my room. - --Then a line started to form...behind us. I was first in line, first on in the door. Kick ass. I went directly up to the stage and I was front row center. Kick even more ass. - --We stood and waited there for about 30 mins, until Hobex came out. They are really good live. You should check them out if you get a chance. We got Greg's set list. Well, actually, there was more mooching involved. Daniel (trentjerome) who was the person I was talking to before, grabbed it and gave it to me. I don't know their songs too well, so I will fill in the songs I know: Rollin Wrong Mind Inside Tread Windows (They gave out singles of this song. Its really awesome) Back in the 90's (How could you go wrong with the title track?) GRUV (With a little line over the U) Steve Solaar (This had to be their best song of the nite. At one point, Jimbo actually walked out on stage (Behind them all, hard to see him, but I did) and started dancing and stuff. All in all a great performance by Hobex.) - --Then, Hobex was done, and they were like "Well, now you know who is coming out in a few" and the crowd of around 350-400 people went nuts. They left, and the setup began. At this point, it was so hot in there, my two cousins couldn't take it and went to get sodas. The people behind us pushed and they lost their front row spot, but I stayed. The guy from the TLA came out and put some set lists down and I yelled to him and asked if I could have one and he just said "NO" but no worries. Not only did I copy it down, but Daniel mooched Kat's after the show! I think he got it signed. Here is the setlist: Ghost of Stephen Foster Club Limbo Bedlam Ballroom Prince Nez Keep it Hot (Off their new album. Real cool song. Lots of piano.) Danny Diamond Do It (Off their new album. One of the most energetic songs I have ever heard. I can't wait for the New CD to come out...more on that later) Bad Business Man If it aint broke, Don't fix it (New one, lots of horns. Man can Dave play the trombone. Its amazing. And Je? You have to see this man live if you haven't already. I swear he has enough sound to not need a mic in front of him to fill the TLA, and its not exactly tiny.) Low Down Man Stop Drop & Roll (New one. Trombone solos all over.) Bent out of Shape (New one. Kat sings this. Its waltzy almost. Really cool) Memphis Exorcism (This had to be one of the greatest of the night. Jimbo was introducing all the new members, and when he did, they played a solo.) Bed Bugs (Wow. Thats all I'm gunna say. One of the best! In the middle, there was a piano solo. Dear God, can Reese Gray play a piano. He is so talented. Amazing) Flight of the Passing Fancy (This was outstanding. Everyone got a solo. Tim Smith is awesome as well.) Then they left. Everyone kept screaming for them, and they came back out for an encore. Lover's Lane Dark Eyes (Really cool new instrumental. Dave plays a bunch of solos again.) And there it is. No possible ways for descrepency (sp?) because I copied Kat's while it was still on the stage onto the back of my sales slip from Tower Records. - --Then, everyone left but about 20 people, me including. I looked to the backstage enterance and Reese was standing there. Two of us went over and asked for his autograph. As soon as we did, Tim came walking out, and the two of them bullshit about like "Should we or shouldn't we." Obviously they did, and we got pictures with them. I got my Australian Single signed (Oh yeah, by Chris, too) and also my tour poster. They are both really cool guys. Chris came back onto the stage, and signed for people. He pointed at me and my cousin and was like "You already got me!" - --Then, the TLA people made us leave. They were miserable people. So, we left, and my two cousins waited with me and a bunch of others were there. We waited for about 20 minutes until Greg from Hobex came out with a huge piece of pizza. I had him sign the Hobex shirt I bought. Then, Tim and Reese came out again. We talked about Mammoth pushing the record back to August or September, and about how they got discovered. Here is what I remember of the story: Tim: "Well, Dave and I are in a band together right now, the Countdown Quartet, and Jimbo was recruting one day. We went to him and we got tryouts, and what do you know we made it into the Squirrel Nut Zippers." Reese: "Hey, what about me? Well, actually..." Tim: "We were at a piano bar, and Reese was playing. Jimbo got his number and called him the next day." Reese: "Bulls*it. He called me THREE FU*KING WEEKS later! Then, I got to try out, he liked my stuff, and I got in." Thats basically the extent of it with a lot of cursing and nothingness left out. Tim and Reese are really cool guys in person. - --Then, a friendly TLA guy who we had talked to before came over and asked us if Jimbo and Katherine came out. We said no, and he went back inside. He came out and whispered to us "They'll be out in 5 or 10." I was all happy about that, and waited. At this point, a fight started across the street. One of my cousins wanted to leave, but I said no, and we stayed. Then, whadda ya know, out come Kat and Jim! Wow, I went right over to Kat and had her sign my CD, and she was really nice. She seems like she is very shy. Especially when she said "Wow. Someone came in and told us there were people waiting for us out here." like she was surprised we waited. I got pictures with her, and she used my pen to sign a bunch. My cousin had her sign my tour poster, and then I got her to sign her picture in the booklet for Hot where she is standing by a window and you can see Jimbo in the back. Then, I got Jimbo's. He is so outgoing. I got him to sign my CD, and got like, 3 pictures with him. He leaned over to me and said "Now, we have to get my wife into the bus. She's five months pregnant, you know." And I congradulated him and Kat. He signed my tour poster as well, and Kat gave me my pen back. She was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Kat and Jim then left, and we got ready to go. Tim, Reese, and Greg were still out there. Since my cousin is paraniod, she asked TIM SIMTH to walk us to our car! KICK ASS!!! We walked and talked, I told him how awesome they sound now, and he said "Thanks. We enjoy playing small venues." And then we got to the car. He was all smiles and was like "Have a safe trip!" We shook hands with him and off we went! He probably thought we were crazy, the car was not half a block away. I didn't say a word because I thought it was cool that he walked us to the car. I got a lot of cool pictures there, I'll send em out when I get them developed, I am planning on getting them on Kodak photo CD. I got pictures with Chris, Tim, Reese, Kat and Jimbo, but Stu, Dave and Je never came out. Oh well, the night was still awesome. Well, thats all for now. If I think of anything else, I'll send it later. ~~G GEorGE ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 09:09:05 PST From: "Daniel Summers " Subject: Philly Concert & Samsara Well, last night's concert was very good! The new members really are GREAT musicians, especially the piano player!! OH MY GOODNESS, that man is absolutely AMAZING!!! After the concert, though, he came across as being quite stuck on himself, though. All the others were very outgoing and extremely kind, as always. I got to chat briefly with Kat before the concert, as I saw her on the street. Then after the concert, I got to meet everyone but Je. He just hid out inside, and since I had to make my 6 hour trip back to Ohio (Very early monday moring) I knew I couldn't wait around for longer. I got some pictures from the concert (no flash), so we'll se if they come out OK. If they do, I'll try to post them on a web page for all to see. I also got a picture of Kat, Jim and I together, as well as me with Chris. They're all black and white pictures, so they may come out interesting. I'll try to get the set list up soon. I don't have it with me right now, but I can get it soon. Someone else might post it anyway. I hope this doesn't ruin the surprise for anyone, but the very first song of the evening was (And probably will be for all the concerts) The Ghost of Steven Foster. The great thing is they play along to the video which is projected onto the front. It was absolutely amazing!!! Such an AMAZING VIDEO!!!!!! They played quite a few new songs, and they all sounded good. I'll need to hear them on the album, though, before I'll really be able to know if I like them (Since songs do sound different live). The piano player, as I said before, really can pound that piano like there's no tomorrow!!!!! He adds so much, I just wish he didn't come across as so cocky!!! Maybe it's all my imagination, though. Who else was there last night? I met George, but not you, Eddie. Where were you in the place? Did you stay after the concert for autographs? Maybe I met you, and just didn't know. Well, I also finally recieved my copy of Samsara on Saturday (Number 38, i think). From what I heard so far, I think I'll like it. I don't think I'll like it as much as the SNZ's. I don't know exactly why, but it sounds sort of choppy or something. Well, anyway, I'll give it a few more listens and see if it really grows on me =) Well, I'm gonna go for now, but maybe I'll think of more to post later. You all missed out on a great concert!!! I remember when I saw the ZIppers last year around my area. I have to agree that Kat is very sweet. We talked for a while, about music and how each of us got involved in it. When Jimbo came out, my pal and I asked him how long he had been playing trombone. He was like "oh, 'bout two years." and I was like "Wow, that's not long at all! you're really awesome!" and he was like "Gee, really? Thanks.. shucks, I think I suuck" (with his long southern drawl). and I was like "no way!" and told him that i played tbone as well. We talked about that for a few, and when we left he was like "Don't y'all give up on that trombone now, you hear?" It was cool. all the others were really nice as well. I was going to take a pic. of Chris, and he was like "Well what the hell, get in this thing! You don't want just a random picture of me!" also got a great pic of Tom and his Dad and me and Ken (who took my hat and wore it! it was awesome).. hopefully, I will see the new Zippers soon. - -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 18:10:04 -0500 From: Captain Clown Subject: Re: The Bowl of Fire in Montreal On Sun, 28 Nov 1999 21:58:33 -0800 (PST), you wrote: > > >> and I don't have the >> CD either! ... where can I get it? > >that's what i'm saying! i keep looking at every record >store i go to, even tower in hollywood (they have >everything) but to no avail. can anyone help us out? >(we're talkin bout the Quality 6 cd) 1. go to the desk 2. say "do you have Kevin O'Donnell's Quality Six" 3. they say no 4. say "can you order it for me?" 5. they say yes 6. wait 7. keep waiting 8. buy it for a really high price - - Peter Destructo "Lately I find Batman Beyond to be of such a quality that it actually makes me wish I was watching Pokemon instead." - Reliable Source, Batman: The Animated Newsletter #47 "Our staff picks...
