Hooray!!! No more despondent daniel! I decided to weather the 7-8 hour trip, and go see the Zippers in Philly this coming weekend! (I'm going to college in Ohio) I must be honest, though, and say that the zippers aren't my only reason for coming to Pa. I'm also going to go to another concert (Jennifer Kimball at The Wire in New Cumberland--her music's NOTHING like the zippers...more folk-pop. Anyone else a fan?). My parents live in Lancaster County, so I will just stay with them. I still don't have my ticket for the philly concert, so I'll need to get that today. $14.00 sounds very reasonable to me! (I just paid $20.00 to see Marie Brennen-the lead singer for Clannad, as well as a solo singer, and as well the sister of Enya. Truly amazing to see her live in a small venue!) So, I remember some on the list were talking about meeting before the concert in Philly and shopping or something... is anyone planning to do this? I can't wait to see them! I think they'll still be great! I'm anxious to hear how a piano will sound with the band. I guess they've used it before, but not as a standard instrument. I STILL HAVE NOT RECIEVED TOM'S CD, and I'M GETTING ANXIOUS!!! You all say it's good, and I hope I agree! Sometimes it takes me a while to get acustomed to new music. Anyway, I'm glad I'll be going to see the zippers! About how many from this list are going? Raise your hands, and I'll count you all. hmmmm. that looks like a couple, but I'm bad at counting, so just write in or something =) Sincerely; Daniel Summers P.S. Does anyone have a portable minidisc recorder to record the concert? I went to NC for thanksgiving. had a real fun time! apparently my bf's mom is much closer to Jim than i thought. He and stu have laid down some tracks for her upcoming album and stuff. and he's going to produce it in january. I think y'all would dig her stuff, kind of Zippery, kinda country, kinda different. We went to see the Countdown Quartet on Saturday night. Seems that mama had to talk some business with Jim, so i got to meet him! He said i was "very sincere"...uhhh... anyway, he was gushing about his baby. They found out it's going to be a girl, he wants to name her "sweet Pea" but he thinks they'll settle for Ivy Mae, which is beautiful. Jim is SO excited. The baby is due on April 25, which is one day after Kat's birthday. She'll be a taurus just like me! (april 28) I want to take up a collection for some flowers and stuff for Kat when the baby comes, so don't let me forget. The Countdown Quartet was wicked awesome. Opening up for them was the Jumpstarts, who are a great 1st-wave ska band from chapel hill. Tim Smith is the sax player and one of the vocalists and he is VERY cool. he's one of the new guys for SNZ. he'll add something new to the group. The Jumpstarts are on a couple of "skampalations," that's where i'm sure i've heard them from. I've got "The Spawn of Skarmageddeon" on which they did "Part of the Past" and they are also on a recent album called "Ska: the instrumentals" and i can't remember the record label. So then came the CQ. They marched out, New Orleans style, from the back..david wright on trombone leading the pack, the bass player on clarinet, ted the drummer playing tambourine, Tim Smith on tenor, and jimbo coming up the rear with a trombone. they stood and danced in front of the stage doing a sweet rendition of "mama don't allow" with verses for all the instruments. (Mama don't 'low no trombone playin' in the house. mama don't 'low no trombone playin' in the house. dave, sell that thing and get a job you ain't no good anyhow. Mama don't 'low no tromboneplayin' in the house.) They played a buncha sweet numbers, and the sparse crowd got up and boogied. it was a sight to see!!!!! i was jealous that my boyfriend had no interest whatsoever in being there, so i didn't get to shake my ass. ah well. i had fun anyway. His mom, who has asthma, said she couldn't breathe in the smoky room so she wanted to leave, so i only saw about 4 numbers :( I am quite pleased with the Zippers' selection of Dave Wright. He is an INCREDIBLE t-bonist, and sings just like Louis (which is funny, cuz he's a skinny assed white boy...) If there is anyone who can come close to replacing Tom, it's him. I am really happy with the idea that Tom got to go do his own thing and they got a suitable replacement. y'all are going to love it!!! here's a little something about the CQ. http://redeyeusa.com/yeproc/countdown_quartet.htm if you go to http://redeyeusa.com and then follow the links for the yep Roc records catalog, you can find their album for sale. unfortunately, i don't know HOW to buy it...not that i have the $$ to buy it... :( okay so in conclusion, i got to see 3/8 of the new Zippers play Saturday. I am pleased. the bf's mom had some things to tell me about Reece Gray, but they will surface another time. i am damned tired. oh, and check out www.independentrecordco.com and see Kenny's flash movie if you have't already. it's cuuuute.
