So are Milky Way, Eskimo Pie, and Hershey's. THEY don't have their head up their asses. If not for THE BAND, nobody would have ever heard of Southern's obscure little brand of candy. They can stick their candy where the sun doesn't shine... or perhaps grind it up into cakes which are passed around... Ok. Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire came to my city last week. Holy God, were they ever good. Truly amazing. One of the best live acts I've ever seen. For nineties acts, up there with The Commitments, Parkside Jones and The Cowboy Junkies. Unfortunately, I've never seen the Squirrel Nut Zippers in concert so I really can't comment. All in all, they were truly amazing. For those of you who haven't seen them, if they come to your region, go for it! Even if you are under age, get some fake id and go! Actually, for emotional content, they are up there (for performances that I have seen) with Le Cirque du Soleil (it's a circus show and I laughed and blubberishly cried throughout the whole thing!). I shed a tear while they were playing "Eugene". It's a very pretty song, especially live. They are quite humorous on stage. The show was worth it just to see Kevin drum. What enthusiasm! He looked as though he were flying off of his seat! Andrew kept getting his bow caught in the stage curtain. I sort of felt bad for him. He must go through one of those things a night. It looked a bit tattered at the end of the evening. They are very expensive aren't they? Anyways, I can't really remember what songs they played. They didn't play "50 pieces", which really disappointed me. I should have put in a special request, however, I didn't want to seem pushy. While I was talking to Kevin, I was eyeing the set list that was still on the stage, however, me being my absent minded self, I forgot. They played a fantastic "Vidalia", "Tea and Thorazine" [ or as my friend puts it "that mental institution song".]...etc... There were some songs I didn't recognize. Perhaps they were new. Since it was my first Bowl of Fire show, I really don't know how well they were received. Montreal audiences are notorious for being arseholes. They weren't told to "get the foooook off the stage" ( I saw Mazzy Starr in concert and that's what someone yelled to them. Unfortunately, they complied), so that was good, I guess. Actually, the band probably didn't see this, however, the audience was mesmerized by the end of the night. The pool players stopped doing the thing that they do and intently listened to the music with the pool cues in their hand. This is silly, however, it reminded of the poem that John Hannah read in Four Weddings and a Funeral. (sort of "stop all that you are doing, the Bowl of Fire is playing"). I think that it was a good sign. At the end of the night, they got a very good reception. I was a very unruly clapper. The bad things about the night were: 1. I had a toothache 2. The first band to go on that night was a death metal band. Very loud and headachey. I think they were death metal. It was all screaming. Is that what death metal is? Anyways, it furthered my toothache 3. Jailhouse Rock Cafe is a very skanky bar. So skanky that even their beer was skanky. 4. While I was talking to Andrew, I got a bit of a case of verbal dyslexia. Also called spoonerisms. I don't think he noticed. We were trying to talk over the death metal music. I wasn't going to approach Andrew and the guys simply because I didn't want to bug them. However, my friend had Andrew come over to our table, and I must say he is a terribly, terribly sweet person. All in all, a very enjoyable evening. They are dynamos. Amazing stuff. What can I say? They pulled off an amazingly, terrifically, apocalyptically beautiful set and still had enough energy to drive the fifteen hours back to Chicago right after their gig. They are the troopers. I checked out the Billions.Com tour dates thingy and I have to say that I envy you Chicago people. Bowl of Fire and Quality 6 are playing New Years' Eve. Too lucky. Does anybody know if Bowl of Fire will be doing support for Squirrel Nut Zippers in the year 2000? Also, what is up with that Bowl of Fire film? Is it purchaseable? Did anybody see it? Is anybody in the know? Also, I purchased the Quality six album from Kevin. I love it. Every song on it is simply amazing. I think I might be the last one on the list to get this cd, however, if by chance, someone doesn't have it, it's a worthwhile investment. I especially love the song "Margaret". Does anybody know where Colin's solo album can be bought? He has a very nice voice. My friend and I were impressed upon hearing the song for the first time. Anyways, take care and enjoy your holiday weekend.
