[Shaun Smakal ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1999 10:00:56 -0500 From: jbrandt Subject: RE: chat Andy, what you replied to in the last Landing was my post about using the chat clent called IRC to chat, instead of paraChat. for parachat, you don't have to download anything. if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Actually, no. if it doesn't work, you try again. and if it doesn't work after about 5 tries, then it doesn't work. what i was sayng about downloading and stuff being daunting is that IRC is a program you physically have to download (unless you telnet to it, and if you can fgure out how to telnet to it then you can fgure out how to DL it too) and i thnk there's somewhere else to access it. i know WebTV people can use it too. and like i said before, if you have WebTV and can access IRC on your own, why do you have something as non-powerful as webtv? but lke said, i didn't feel like, or have time to, sit down and teach Tom and Ken how to use IRC. Anyway, maybe we're gettng IRC-Internet Relay Chat and IRC-Independent Record Co. confused. As for checking out whether parachat worked on your computer beforehand, well all i can say is that i think a week before the chat, at least two times, i told everyone to go to the site and see if the chat worked for you. How would you know if it worked? If you got in the chat room, it worked. Okay, so how would you know if you could talk? take 2 minutes to ask a friend to meet you there. Sorry i didn't explan all this before, but some of it i DID explain, and if there were gong to be problems, i would have been happy to help out. i was expecting emails. But no one emailed me, except Andy, and Shaun who ICQ'd me. So i'm guessng that the major problem wasn't the chat client, it was the lack of interest in the chat. i'm sorry for those of you who missed it. I can't really give a good reaction of how exciting it was because I've talked to those guys before. matt seemed to think it was cool. I'm sort of embarassed about how small the turnout was but I think we can blame that on 3 things: 1. lack of interest on The Landing's part 2. The bad chat client 3. Tom's lack of popularty/The Shrub's lack of popularity. so...whatever. Oh, and as for Tom making fun of Andrew Bird...This is how their conversation went: Tom: Birdy, do you remember blowing bubbles as a kid? andrew: oh yes, it was one of my favorite chldhood experiences. It was so relaxng and freeing blah blah blah blah etc. Tom: yeah well Bubbles is back in town and he wanted to see you. andrew: *gives tom a confused look and then goes off to cry in his beer* there ya go. I hope I like it. I'm worried, though, that I won't like it! (Is that a sin in zipperland?) Anyway the real reason I wrote is to complain and moan because I can't go to the any of the Zippers (Or Andrew Bird) concerts next month!!! I was hoping to be able to go to the Zippers concert in Philadelphia, but I don't think that will happen since I really don't have money for a ticket, plus I live about 6-7 hours from Philly (Right by Wheeling, WV but across the border in Ohio). I mean I love the Zippers, but I can't afford a trip like that unfortunately. I was in Philly for 2 concerts before (Sinead O'Connor/Chieftans and Tori Amos) and I was hoping to be able to go to this concert, too, since we could all get together and do something beforehand maybe, but alas......I'm out of stinking luck. How much are the tickets anyway for the Philly concert? Anyone know? Well, I'm done complaining now =) I'll try to be happy and not jealous of all of you who get to go to these wonderful concerts while I'm stuck in the wastelands where no good concerts come =( (I'm begging for pitty here!!!) I have been on the list for many months now, read it daily, but haven't actually said much before. First of all, to Jess, I am obscure44. I thoroughly enjoyed the chat on Sunday. That was definately one of the coolest things ever (the excitement is here cause I have never talked to them like you have/do). Anyways, about a transcript, it was possible, as I do have one of the portion of the chat that I attended. For future reference, highlight the text in the chat window, the press CTRL-Insert, then using SHIFT-Insert, paste the text into any word processor. It's an old key-combo. Let me know if you want the transcript of what I have. About the topic of various chat programs, I have a very simple HTML format chat client. Everyone that can browse a webpage can use it. Let me know if you are still looking for a method of chatting next time (if there is a next time). Let me say that, Jess, I think you did a fine job with announcing the chat times, etc. But, I must admit, I too totally forgot until I was checking my email that afternoon and saw the email you sent out while you were chatting as a last notice. Well, later. [kenmosher] I know that, I meant a real NEW live record [kenmosher] I'm a mean drunk [kenmosher] I mean Jesus Christ [ZipperJJ] Jesus Christ declined to chat, so we got Tom instead. [tommaxwell] down, boy. we're all friends here. [kenmosher] I better watch out, what if those millennium people might get - - mad HAH HAHA ggood one jess [kenmosher] moke spot [spacechimp] don't forget to get stocked up on canned goods [ZipperJJ] i think Ken needs to be sent to bed. then we can talk abou thim. Tom Maxwell XXOOXXOO" [tommaxwell] obscure44 is a person of rare taste and culture! obscure44> [bows] [spacechimp] the diversity on the samples is amazing obscure44> my girlfriend will definately get teary over the x's and o's :) [ZipperJJ] maybe some little hearts, too? obscure44> in that case, she'll pass out [vegasbaby] and a big kiss [vegasbaby] you'll have to stock up on lipstick [ZipperJJ] that means tom would have to wear lipstick. [tommaxwell] actually, i think i speak for kenny that we stayed true to the - - snz principles we hold dear on samsara, as far as musicality & production - - values go. i might put a little pee on each CD so it will be marked. obscure44> manhood and territory... [ZipperJJ] hey! on the mailing list we did a little survey of some things - - about members of SNZ. like, who looks best in a dress (not kat), who'd you - - like to be stuck in an elevator with... [tommaxwell] we did a local tv show and i'm in drag for some of it. in - - another part i'm stuffing circus peanuts in my mouth. if i've learned - - anything, it's how to entertain [kenmosher] i was in the arch elevator with 5 strangers in st louis, and I - - tourchered them. Jokes, gasps, the whole 9 yards [ZipperJJ] so how can we get a copy of this TV show, man? :) [tommaxwell] we're going to try to get some of it available on website [kenmosher] i'lll inquire [kenmosher] how do you put video on the net? [ZipperJJ] poor Shaun...he's stuck on the other side. obscure44> well, I have my little sister's preformance of Music Man to - - attend now, but let me say it was a honor, Tom and Ken.
