Ken is from St. Louis MO....Midwestern boy. Mike, I'll try to get you that CD. you most definitely aren't screwed. the people you ordered it from (ken and beth) are just a little disorganized, that's all. I told Ken that as his pal, i support his decision and i understand him. it was just no fun anymore. that's a good thing because it meant he cared about the music so much that it wasn't worth it to him to compromise it just to make all these idiots happy (not the rest of the band, i mean the multiple suings). I also told him that as a fan i'd like to beat him with a blunt object, but that would be all Mark David Chapman of me. As for the "big news monday" thing on the site, i am pretty sure it was going to be his announcement of him leaving the band, and taking down the site. but the band had a little talk-sie about it and decided not to make a big hubub about it and just take it down quietly...er, as quietly as it could be. as for it being our business to know how they're getting along...well, not really. if it weren't for Ken, we'd have no link to the band. Y'all woul dbe getting second and third hand info from me from whoever i could dig up. Kat and Jim are very private people, and so are stu, je and chris. the band hasn't broken up. there will be a new sax and piano player. and trombone too, i think. I'm guessing it's wither guys from the Countdown Quartet or the Sideways Alley Jazz band. Both of those bands are phenominal and woul dbe good matches for the zippers, but yes, it'd be weird. katherine is pregnant, look for a show in DC before the millenium, before the baby gets here. i have no other info on that show, but you can call or email Erik Selez at Red Ryder, EHSFuzz@aol.com so i think that's all i have to say. gee, at least we're getting some volume here, eh? and don't forget...North Mississippi All Stars (list of dates later), Bowl of Fire, Quality Six, Jazz Squad, Knockdown Society, and "Tom Maxwell, solo arteest". love you Jess READ THE SHRUBBERY! http://www.theshrubbery.com *Humor, music, movies, lit, and more!* New Every Month. I think we should wait on the funerals. Didn't Ken say they would be recording an album this fall to be released this spring? Of course we still have BOF, KDS, TME, KW's JS and whatever else comes down the pike. I think that Hawkeye guy that plays the mandolin should put out an album. I'd buy it. But to say that the Zippers are done for is selling short the remaining members. I, for one, never thought I would see something like the Squirrel Nut Zippers in the year 2000, so I'm pulling for them to make it through this debacle, as, I'm sure, are the rest of you. I just think (hope) everyone is flying apart for nothing. That's all... ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Oct. 14: Subject: the only cool thing about everything... ...is that I have a menu signed by both Tom and Ken from a restaurant I ate at right before one of there shows while they were grabbing a bite to eat as well. Nicest guys in the world, I'd be the last to blame them for quitting. The bad thing about all this is that since they are basically no long "the sqirrel nut zippers", even the old zippers are no longer my favorite band . Yup, I'm not a believer in praising the dead, so they are no longer #1 in my book. 2 1/2 years isn't bad though... I swear to you, if they were still together and I could anticipate seeing them in concert at least one more time, they would be out in front by a huge margin. The new list (fyi): 1. Beck 2. Fatboy Slim 3. Ben Folds 4. SNZ (the old band) 5. Propellerheads 6. Portishead 7. SNZ (the current band, assuming they are still a band and will release more music and will tour, etc. Basically they'll be the zippers, but they'll be pretty damn weak) 8. Cake Okay, I really want to see Tom and Kenny get together with Ben Folds, Darren Jesse, and Robert Sledge and make Ben Folds Five really five! Yeah. That would be the best ever. I am very very happy with tom's decision to leave the band now. starts out with like...44 seconds of either bagpipes, oboe on acid...or some other double reed thing. huh. i don't have the track names or anything, just a hax0rd copy from Kenny. next song is a really cool new-orleans march stomp style. lots of woodwinds, tuba, trumpet, piano. neato. okay, here's a old-skool blues-with-mens-chior thing. cool. ripping bluesy electric guitar thing. wowzers. ripping sax blues. andy, i'm thinking it's a bari. here's an interesting thing. sounds a little creepy, with lots of clarinet and muted trumpet to begin...then happy tuba and piano duet...then into solos. i don't know the performers either, and i'd love to know. ah, female singer. lovely. not Kat. lovely tho. sounds like Kat but a little lower register. Ah, female singer duet with tom, even better. this makes me very happy, happy enough to get over Kenny for the moment. www.tommaxwell.com is NOT up yet, but is coming soonly. can't wait till it gets here. i am gonna buy me a copy tho, just so i have a numbered thingy and all. you will all buy it, cuz you will all love it. i swear to god. ah, here's a little chinese-sounding thing. lovely. female singer. wouldn't that be weird if the female singer was his wife, Mel? that'd be all jim-and-Kat-cute of them :) Maybe it's the cute little blondie girl from The Carbines. She's all cool too. god, i miss tom's voice. it's so distinctive. we need to get a show on with Tom Maxwell, BOF and the Q6. that'd make me happy. Andrea! get on that! :) i wish i were smarter and could tell you if any of these songs are covers, but i can't i'm just going to assume they're not. but damn, they rock. ah, country thingy...complete with southern accents and steel guitars. how weird. weird. it's like Tom wanted to just put songs of every ilk he was fond of on this album. can't wait to see what critics say! Awww, here's a sweet little short song (49 secs) with just tom and the piano. "nobody likes you" cute cute. i'll have to transcribe some lyrics for y'all. this next song is just an acoustic guitar solo. coolness. holy crap. Tom's preacher impersonation. Starts out with tom and piano, then big black men's chior comes in, then tom piano and bass...chior....wow...."roll them bones".... WOAH! pipe organ! Hello Mr. kite! kind of creepy sounding, march style...."hell"-like song? perhaps. but not as "big" sounding, ya know? But damn, big pipe organ... harp. huh. a harp song. cute. female singer. okay so that was my quick quick train-of-thought overview of the CD, and i hope you enjoyed it. i'm going to go sleep for 2 days now. oh wait...tomorrow BFF in Cincy, yay! :) Jess *********************************************************** * --+-READ THE SHRUBBERY-+-- * http://www.theshrubbery.com --New Every Month- -Humor, Music, News and More-- *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 23:02:06 -0400 From: Dawn Carr Subject: RE: SAMSARA Jess, thank you SO much for that post!
