Well, maybe Im wrong. It seemed like everything fell to pieces without Don. Maybe no one wants to admit it, but it seemed like Don kept that "collective effort" that Ken talks about going. The band started out as an arcane way of playing weird old music... and just look at Don's contributions. You didnt see things like that on FAVORITES... Maybe im just trying to explain this away. Oy. Is that what Ken had us waiting impatiently over the weekend for, just to watch him pull the plug on the website, with only a second-hand explanation to placate "the beloved fans"? I'm sorry, but this whole situation just gets smellier and smellier. What the hell is going on down there. Maybe SNZ will go out of business altogether and have their whole liquidation sale on ebay. Maybe Katherine's alleged pregnancy really does spell the end of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Maybe Don is the "evil mastermind" behind the lawsuits. And how do legal issues become an excuse for not giving us some insight on personal feelings of band members. I'm not saying the fans need to know everything that's going on, but I get the feeling the band feels they owe it to us to blow smoke up our collective asses. Like we can't handle knowing that every band member might not be getting along with every other band member. You'll have to forgive me, I'm a yankee, but is this a Southern thing to put up such a front? I'm eagerly awaiting the day when the veil will be torn from OUR faces. Am I the only one who's wondering these things? Or just the only one not afraid to say I do for fear of incurring the wrath of fellow landing members. If it's anything like coollist was, they tend to take things pretty personally. I'm not trying to piss anyone off and if I succeeded I'd like to apologize ahead of time. I want people to see this crazy film! cheers, Andrea / Bowl of Fire ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 07:10:14 PDT From: "Daniel Summers " Subject: Good-bye Ken Well darn-it; I definately don't want to see Ken go, but I'm certainly not going to hold any grudges against him. It's better for him to do what he believes is right than to spend time "compromising" his standards. I think that as a list, we need to support him as well, just like we need to support Tom. As much as we may hate the idea of it, people do grow and mature and they DON'T STAY THE SAME!!!!! We can't expect our friends, the SNZ's, to stay the same for 20 years either! By leaving, maybe Ken will be able to contribute in some other way to our country's desperate need for quality music. Well, that's my 2 cents. I just don't think that ANYONE on the list has the right to get mad at Ken for his decision. He was very good to his fans (My goodness, try to find another band that is THAT friendly and accesible!!!). I do understand, though, that I don't see everything, and many more things may be going on in the background than what I see. BUT, I do agree with Jess that she shouldn't have been the bearer of bad news. Well, so long....farwell.....al veidersein {Forgive me, I do not know that language}.....godnight..... Daniel J. I am a new member of this list, and am a huge fan and advocate of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. I must say that after the email from Jess, my heart was heavy... and it is a very sad day for us all, I'm sure. As soon as Tom left the band and I saw that everybody (with the exception of Stu Cole) was doing their own side projects, I thought something may have been up. But I am writing not only to send my condolences, but I have a business issue also to contend with. About a month ago, I ordered a copy of Joe Tullos' Scoundrel's Waltz from the website, and still have not gotten it. Does anyone on this list know if they take 6-8 weeks to ship, or have I lost $14 and been screwed over by Ken? He has not answered any of my emails or inquiries on the site... can anyone help me out here? Has anyone else ordered anything from the site that would be able to give me an estimated shipping time or anything like that? Any info would be a great help.. for those who do not want to clutter the list with this question, just reply directly to me at: BlowRedBlow@aol.com With sadness in my heart... Well first of all: it's not really any of our business, fans or otherwise, and secondly Ken is not speaking for the band collectively. I can certainly understand his frustration, and his desire to move on and get back to making music. The lawsuit has apparently stopped or obstructed the work on any potential new album or touring plans. Jim and Katharine are "the band" in terms of the record deal, I don't believe any of the others are under contract to Mammouth - and in fact Tom's record deal was cancelled by Mammouth so he is free to do his own thing. Technology is our friend... musicians no longer have to rely on record contracts to get published, or reach an audience. >Like we can't handle knowing that >every band member might not be getting along with >every other band member. You'll have to forgive me, >I'm a yankee, but is this a Southern thing to put up >such a front? I'm eagerly awaiting the day when the >veil will be torn from OUR faces. I don't think anyone is putting up a front just because every gory detail has not been revealed. Even if I was privy to such information, it would not be subject to public disclosure without the permission of those involved. This is the kind of stuff that you may see talked about candidly and without bitterness 20 years from now when VH1 Behind The Music does the history of the Squirrel Nut Zippers Reunion tour. Until then, it's none of our business. I'm sure the press will come up with their own crock of bull to explain it - as they have already come up with to screw up the band's reputation along the way. This kind of crap takes its toll even among friends. The bottom line is that SNZ has paid the price for daring to be different... and having the audacity to have two gold and one platinum record in spite of their lack of obedience to industry trends. A band that appeals to ages from 2 to 102 and plays on vintage instruments and records in one take really screws up all the marketing demographics. May the suits continue to be screwed in such a way... and beyond!!
