I think i remember it from Jazz Improv class. It was one of those songs we had to learn in a million different keys. Tom pointed out in I think the "swingtime" article that calypso all comes from the same "template" if you will, and the fun part about it is mixing it up. That's why "Trou macacq" wasn't the first single from PF because they didn't want to be pegged as a calypso band. hehe as for Shorty Brown...Clay, I'd be able to figure out who Shorty Brown is if you come over my house and make damn Quicktime run on my computer! hehe Jess *********************************************************** * --+-READ THE SHRUBBERY-+-- * http://www.theshrubbery.com --New Every Month- -Humor, Music, News and More-- *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 10:21:12 GMT From: kobyc@softhome.net (Peter Destructo!) Definitely was a swing number from the second album, I remember that. It was in the middle of a kickass bogged down horn solo a` la` the SO version of La Grippe. Well, its in a blues style as far as time goes. But a Calypso is in blues time also (up tempo). Go to www.tunes.com and enter (The Louis Armstrong Collection, Vol. 4: Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines) You can hear St James Infirmary and West End Blues. I also have a CD with Louis doing "St james" with the All-Stars, its a short song though. You can tell by the lyrics how much the blues is a part of jazz (notice the rhythm): I went down to the St James Infirmary Saw my baby there She stretched out on a long white table So sweet, so cold, so fair Let her go, let her go, God bless her Wherever she may be She can look the this wide world over But she'll never find a sweet man like me When I die want you to dress me in straight lace shoes I wanna a boxback coat and a stetson hat Put a twenty dollar gold piece on my watch chain So the boy's will know I died standing flat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
