The Immortal soundtrack is deffinately worth whatever you pay for it! (I got in an outlet store for $5.99.) This music IS Chapel Hill! In my opinion there aint a bad track on the CD. Most of the bands aren't in the same league as the Zippers but that dosn't make them sound any worse. I think it would be worth finding a copy of this movie somewhere--at least to just hear the music (see below). Here's a run done on the tracks most are Rock/Alternative: 1) DANNY DIAMOND (live)****--Squirrel Nut Zippers. It's Danny Diamond! It's the Zippers! It's Live! You can tell this was done in a club-it sounds great! Also the intro (action, act 1, snap of the clipboard thingie) leads me to believe that the Zippers actually make an appearance in the movie. 2) TOURS IN PROGRESS*--Phil Ford, Andrew Taylor, and Meredeth Leigh Sauce. The CD has several tracks--2, 5, 10, 14, & 17--which must be cut from the movie. Actually they are kinda goofy (read: independent film). 3) DON"T ASK****--Reverb-A-Ray. This song kicks @$$!! I can't explain it. Reverb-A-Ray deserves some kind of recognition. I can't see how this song hasn't made this band at least a one-hit-wonder (they are capable of doing better than one hit I assure you). You've gotta hear it to believe it. College/Rock/Alternative. 4) WEEBLE***--Psycho Sonic Cindi. Great tunes. A rock/alternative college band kinda mix. These guys have an album out and I'm gonna find it. C/R/A 5) LINDA"S THEME*--Andrew Taylor and Mike Shaw. Another movie thing. These two do a short guitar sequence. Doesn't sound too bad. 6) COLUMN SHIFTER**--Capsize 7. This one's a rock song. It's good but I'm not a huge rock fan. I don't have any problem listening to this though. 7) THE '72 STRAT--Andrew Taylor and Matt Brookshire. This is just pointless. This has to be one funky movie. 8) YOU AND ME GIRL (live)****--Vertigo Joyride. Another college band (I think). These guys can play! Agian I find myself thinking there must be something in that Chapel Hill water! These guys kick just as much @$$ as Reverb-A-Ray. This is a loud one. 9) VALENTINE***--Reverb-A-Ray. Not bad at all. Still, it's a little harsher than the Zippers but I still don't mind listening to them play! Where's the Reverb-A-Ray album! 10) CANDY COUNTER*--Walt Bost and K. K. More movie bites. This one is kinda funny though. 11) SHOW ME***--Greg Humphreys. This great guitar solo fades in through the previous track. This sounds pretty eclectic (jazz, blues, rock, etc...). Just sounds good. 12) BEES IN A JAR****--June. Oh! My! God! Absolutely amazing! This is the stuff dreams are made out of people!! Where is this band? I don't know. But I do know that people should know! It's hurts to see/hear stuff like this not goin' platinum. 13) EAR TO EAR****--Sex Police. Hey these guys are great! The use of the horns is wild. And wouldn't ya know it? It's JE!! 14) CHEESY B MOVIE*--Greg Humphreys (actor). Actually, I don't recall hearing this. Must be the memory loss caused by the back-to-back June/Sex Police euphoric combo. 15) COFFEE CUP (live)**--Dillion Fence. It's an okay track--not the best on the CD though. 16) DON'T TAKE ME FOR THE FOOL****--The Trout Band. It's deffinately gotta be the water! Another good one fighting for what little memory goes into keeping a song stuck in your head all day. More great college band sound. 17) MYTHS AND LEGENDS*--Frank Aard and Andrew Taylor. More movie madness. 18) BALLAD IN BLUE***--Dexter Romweber. This guy's from the Flat Duo Jets. Good Muscian. This track has a great jazz/blues club tone to it. 18a) HIDDEN MOVIE OUTTAKES*--unknown. This short bit is about as good as the movie tracks get. 18b) HIDDEN SONG**--unknown. Only heard it a few times. It's not bad but it's great either. 18c) --see above-- I mean it everybody, this is a great album. I'm not a major lover of hard core rock music but this is good. I don't think anyone who likes the Zippers as much as y'all and myself do wil have any trouble loving the other stuff on the CD. It's more than worth the 6 bucks I paid for it and it's so old it should be fairly cheap (if you find it). Trust me! It's good! Smakal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 13:12:59 +0000 From: "SHAUN SMAKAL" Subject: Mighty Blue Kings Yeah, it's the Immortal guy. Again. Nothin' new on that front though. Just MBK. I've got there 'Come One. Come All' and 'Live from Chicago' albums and I love both. In fact, as soon as I get the stuff that is, I'll be spreading posters, stickers, and what have you all over the place. I'm hopin to get down to the concert at the Majestic in Detroit this weekend (weather permitting). There kinda like the Zippers in that they don't really fit into any kind of genre. They do a little swing, blues, jazz, etc... It's all good. They really are a very personable group. The contact (through e-mail) I 've had with Eric Maloney (Green Arrow Entertainment & Management) has been superb. He even sent word about some prizes for helping out. If ya haven't heard em, give them a try. If ya like them go to there web site (just type in the band name). I think Matt's got it in his "If you liked the Zippers then you might like these bands" section. Maybe you could drop them a line and tell them your willing to help. You're tired of here about the Immortal soundtrack but I'm going to see if I can get my hands on some more copies. If any one is interested I could maybe sell them at cost to you or whatever. I'm not sure if I can get anymore (I was lucky to get the one I got) but if you are at all inclined, tell me and we'll work something out. I may be mistaken, but it almost looks like Tom on the back cover of the Immortal Album. The dead looking guy with a blood stained shirt, and dried blood coming out of his mouth. June has put out an album!!!! It doesnt have Bees in a Jar but I aint gonna complain!! looks like i'll have to brave the winter weather (that's a really great song) and get tonight!! A fellow June lover from NC has written a nice review of June's album at amazon.com. He explains things better than I ever could. It seems that the only other bands off the Immortal sndtrck that have albums are the Squirrel Nut Zippers (of course), Capsize 7, Dillon Fence, and the Sex Police (i think?). It seems everyone else never got a label. There is a compilation CD that's been out for a while. You may be able to get a copy from Redeye Distribution. The Chicken Wire Gang just recorded their first CD and it should be out by summer. Je was called J.W. since his name is Jerome Widenhouse. He and I lived together in Carrboro, NC '88-'89. He's a devout dead head and a bonefied hippy. He is also the nicest and most unassuming kind of guy you would ever want to meet. Stacy was another good friend. As you know by now, he passed away last year. he was a natural genius in almost everything he did." ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 17:11:50 +0000 From: "SHAUN SMAKAL" Subject: Stu Cole on UPHILL You may know this but Stu's gonna be doin bass and guitar on Jim Smith's "Uphill" CD. (i'm guessing the Peak show at the Bluebird) the show is on at 11 PM. If you can't get a copy of this from a friend, and are really crazy, you can go to www.wunc.org and figure out where to send a $75 contribution in exchange for the show. for $100 you can also get Perennial Faves :P I am 99% sure i can procure a copy. we'll see what becomes of that. I set it up specificly for the chat i am "hosting" this sunday, and also for any other times you want to chat. Here's the lowdown: This sunday, march 14, at 9:30 pm EST (6:30 pm PST) www.liveconcerts.com is broadcasting a Zippers show. My plan is to get as many Landing members (and friends) that can make it, and have a chat in Club Limbo while we listen to the real audio stream of the show. This will be a good chance for us to get to know each other, maybe meet some "lurkers" and perhaps chat with some people we all know and love (MAYBE). There's two things you have to do before Sunday, however. 1. go to www.liveconcerts.com and follow the links to download the free version of RealPlayerG2. You will need this to listen to the show. Get it properly installed and test it before Sunday, so you won't be scrambling. 2. go to Club Limbo http://members.xoom.com/ZipperJJ/snzchat.html and figure out how to use the chat there. First off, it's Java based, meaning you WebTV and UNIX folks, as well as people who have non-Java enhanced browsers (i think the versions of AOL lower than 4.0 are a little tough with Java) won't be able to chat. Also, it's through xoom.com or ParaChat or something, so if you don't have a password through them or don't know how to work their chatrooms, it's best if you just go and try it out. You just have to come up with a name that no one else has. if it asks you for a password, that means someone else is using the name. So be creative. I'd like some feedback to know if anyone plans on coming, so i don't waste my time with this. just email me and let me know. hmm...also, some interesting info on an SNZ video, but i will post again! woo! I'm really sentimental so I pushed through crowed of people and risked getting trampeled to death to stand in the same spot right up fornt. I got completely moshed but it was worth it. Reel big fish opened for them and they were fun even though i don't realy like neo- ska. I got to skank and that was all good.
