It nears one o'clock and the wait is over as the icon in the Australian Music industry, Richard Clapton takes to the stage. The huge crowd shows its appreciation as this very talented man accompanied by some equally gifted musicians takes us down that special road of "Clapton's". I sat stunned and amazed at how true the songs were to what I had heard on CD's and vinyl for all those years. His stage presence was, as it should be. Commenting to the crowd "these are just like the good old days", but you knew this was today and it was just as good! Glory Road, Good Bye Tiger, and my personal favourite Best Years of Our of Our Lives rolled out one after the other; with no loss of quality and all the professionalism one could ask for but shouldn't take for granted. Richard's lead guitarist was something else, he and his guitar were one and he played with a passion that I'm sure he needs to do to feel complete. I took my time and captured some photographic images as the music washed over me. I took both colour from a modern camera which seem to represented the present, as well as black and white from an older traditional camera that to me epitomize the quality of the era that these songs symbolized. Clapton's modern work is in my opinion is as good as anything he has done. It takes with it the experience that only age can bring. Songs from albums such as "Distant Thunder" deserved their place at any gig. We knew our time was running out, however, it was obvious from the crowds cheers for more that this wasn't quite over. There was one last song that hadn't been played. Unfortunately for the man in the sunglasses, an out of tune guitar didn't allow Girls on the Avenue to roll off, as he would have wanted. Getting it right was what mattered to him; to us it didn't change a thing. We had been blown away by this awesome experience and now wait for the release of the new album and the return of this master to our western shores.
