I found it interesting that Lisa says in the interview that a lot of the time in her songs she mocks her own depression as a way of dealing with it. This is something I've long done myself (mock my own depression, internally anyway) and I've long thought it explains some of the appeal of Lisa's music. I forget if I've expressed that opinion here before, or just in conversations with Sean. Oh, yeah, it's coming back to me now. When Sean & I went down to LA to see Lisa that first time, I was trying to figure out what Lisa Germano fanatics had in common that made us like her music so much. A theory I came up with was: perhaps some people do the mock-their-own-depression thing and some don't--the former group tend to be Lisa Germano fans. Sean didn't buy it--he never gets depressed. It also seems to me that some Lisa Germano fans take their depressions very seriously, so my theory wouldn't apply to them either. So maybe the theory is no good--I feel kind of vindicated anyway to find out that it's something I have in common with Lisa. - --Tom In a message dated 4/11/2004 9:56:56 PM Pacific Daylight Time, buzzard@nothings.org writes: > Subj: sycophant July 2003 audio interview > Date: 4/11/2004 9:56:56 PM Pacific Daylight Time > From: buzzard@nothings.org > Reply-to: sycophant@smoe.org > To: sycophant@smoe.org > Sent from the Internet > > > > I guess you always turn into what you hate; I started > guillotinelove.com (while Lisa had supposedly quit) > because I was frustrated with the fact that there were > many LG websites out there, and none of them had > updated with information about Slide. Maybe to make it common to more people, you just have to omit depression as the specific object. Just say generally that some people tolerate self-mockery and some don't. Among those who choose to mock themselves, there are as many objects as there are people (and then some, because some people will mock more than one aspect of themselves). Some might even mock their own "Happiness." Congratulations to all who are "dealing with it." Whatever works! However, i'd argue that most people don't need to identify with an artist's work (music, paint, etc) in order to appreciate it immensely -- perhaps it simply solidifies the deal more quickly :) i love the old David Bowie album "London Boy" (pre-glam rock days, late '60s) - each song gives a glimpse into the life or psyche of a different individual. i don't identify with any of them, but i love hearing about it! with lisa... for me it's the music (beautiful, original, lack of pop top-40 production imprint), both intelligent & crass words, and probably the alcohol metaphors too. justin On Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at 11:21AM, wrote: >Thanks for finding that link Sean, it's really good. > >I found it interesting that Lisa says in the interview that a lot of the time >in her songs she mocks her own depression as a way of dealing with it. > >This is something I've long done myself (mock my own depression, internally >anyway) and I've long thought it explains some of the appeal of Lisa's music.
