What was your initial > exposure My turn on on Lisa happened in a small record store in Oslo, Norway. I went in looking for some music and playing in the store was a lovely voice on some really kinda catchy 'unplugged' sound. It was the OP8 record; of course i bought it; and noticed the 'featuring the ilk of Lisa...' and went looking for records by her; and found the love circus record in the same store. I dunno how i missed it, and the bitter irony is there: cause when returning to Trondheim after my trip to Oslo i saw posters telling bout the OP8 concert that had been in Trondheim the very same weekend i was in Oslo...I've never got to experience her live to this day. A norwegian group/guy called William Hutt is doing Wood Floors from time to time when playing live; good to notice that artist are doin covers of her. - ------------------------------------------------ - ---------------- Kjell Ivar Lxnne--------------- --------- http://home.no.net/kiloenne ---------- - ------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hotmail snakker ditt sprek! - Fe Hotmail pe norsk i dag - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. "who the hell is that?!" i said. it turns out that my fav artist, melissa ferrick, was the _opener_ for someone i never heard of! *growl*growl* so i dragged two friends with me. i still think that it was the best melissa ferrick show i've ever seen (out of ~5 so far). i insisted that we stay for the 'headlining' act, give her a try, broaden our musical horizons. ***the audience totally changed composition, except for us three*** lisa came up on the little stage to a piano. there was a guy up there too, wearing a cowboy shirt, old jeans, and a beaten up cowboy hat pulled so far down you couldn't see his downward facing head at all. we was on the bass guitar. the show was ___captivating___. i really didn't know what to think. but there were certainly lots of people there who seemed to know every word. the bassist was strange b/c he would play one separate note at a time, every once in a while, not necessarily continually. my friends and i kinda made fun of her after the show. it was so bizarre, with lyrics like "we suck" and "beautiful schizo" and "alcoholic - feel it swimming in your stomach". and the music was odd; she seemed to use the carnival/circus sound in at least half the songs, with glissandos up and down the piano. a year later, i could still remember a good number of the songs from the lisa show, as if they'd really sunk in and stuck. i find that quite amazing for someone i'd never heard of. so i finally broke down and sought out 'love circus'. it's still my favorite. needless to say, i now have just about everything she's ever done. (and i was soooo excited when i finally found a copy of "it's a rainbow", b/c that's one the songs i remembered so well from the show, but wasn't on a regular album release.) so there you have it: a real, true story where a lisa concert practically forced someone to become a fan. it was as if she used her musical ovipositor to implant an egg in my brain, an egg that took a year to mature and hatch into full-fledged obsession. admitting it is the first step. funny side note: the next time lisa came to town, no one had heard of the lisa germano concert to which i was referring. it turned out that it was b/c this time, _lisa_ was the opening act -- for bryan adams. at the time the 'egg hadn't quite hatched' and i didn't want to pay $65 to see a potentially short opening act. oh, well. long response, i know, but you asked! justin p.s. kathryn, were you at the electric lounge show in '96? I loved it, but then i learned of the Tchad Blake connection. i was really into binaural recording and i still am, so i bought Slide. I loved that too, and it`s probably still my favourite Lisa album. I wasn`t really online at that point in my life so I found it hard to learn more about Lisa. It also meant I couldn`t buy the albums online. However, I did have my little 4ad catalogue book and I ended up buying her back catalogue via traditional "cheque in the mail" mail order. I`ve only ever seen Lisa live with Neil Finn, but that was 5 times and still wonderful. steven - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
