I saw Lisa the first time in 97 on behalf of OP8, still one of the most memorable concerts for me ever. Howe Gelb has a very fine new album out "The Listerner", so I went. He had Marie Frank from Denmark as support, she also sings on The Listener... she has a nice, bit Kristin Hersh-like voice and looks a bit like a mixture of Nina Persson and Agneta Fdltskog...very blonde, very straight, and friendly, like most of the danish people I got to know (excuse me the common place...) it was a bit weird to hear her joining HG later in the evening on Cracklin' Water....but I must say she coped with the Lisa shadow quite well...being really anything but self-indulgent or so with it ... Howe Gelb was communicating with the crowd in his own way, very desert-bleached and sometimes a bit too sophisticated for my taste....but the show had it's moments, for sure...there was even a guy in the crowd asking: "DO YOU KNOW ELENI MANDELL??" HG: "who?" guy: "ELENI MANDELL!!!" HG:".....no." guy: "YOU SHOULD! SHE IS GREAT! BUT WE WILL DISCUSS IT LATER!!" HG: "how can you know? you can look into the future? hum....hum...." it was a bit strange, I don't know....at least I liked Marie Frank better than EM... ;-) but in fact the show went on for more than 2 & half hours....and it simply ended up lasting too long.... I parted, missing Lisa....and her short, mesmerizing, concentrated performances... I don't know what it is that I missed with Howe Gelb....he has everything musically I like...but somehow....I don't know....maybe it is his fault that he is not Lisa Germano.... :-) Daniel - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. It's at the Henry Fonda Theatre on June 5th. Candace - --- Kathryn Case wrote: > Wow. Chicago.
