I'm glad that Lisa not so popular as Madonna or Tori or any other sexists's chicks. It's question of quantity or quality... Here (at list) not so many people, but it's People from big letter P! Many people love not music, but image only - I can't imagine popularity of pop stars without video and endless "scandals"... Friend of mine always saying - "Man - You listen crap!" (it's about my favourite Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and Lisa), but when he listen the same song on MTV or in OST - he said - It's beautiful!!! So... From my point of view - Lisa much more atrractive person than any other of modern singers... Let's keep her popularity in secret from anybody else!!! Is it just too honest, too melancholy? yup, that last bit -- too honest, too naked, too real. even in her hopeful songs there is a profusion of substance which belies an underlying sorrow deep. and she does not lighten her vocals and lyrics with familiar pop melodies, structures, and instruments either. definitely *not* commercial material, even were it given a wide marketing platform. look at Mark Eitzel, a man who headed up a band [american music club] that at one point a major label tried to push to stardom, and was even named best songwriter of the year by rolling stone magazine i think twice, and has received and continues to receive an abundance of positive critical press for all his releases with his former band and since going solo, an abundance far in excess of the promotion his labels at the time have given him and his sales would indicate -- none of his solo work has sold more than ten thousand units, and none of amc's more than forty thousand. some things the "majority" don't wanna hear. some things even most of the so-called "indie" minority don't wanna hear either. - -w - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. This is possible, but it sounds a little too self-serving and egotistical. I don't know. I played Lisa for my bandmates, who all play old-time music (not mainstream at all!) and they pretty much couldn't stand it. They didn't explain why, exactly. Too mopey? And one of the women didn't like Lisa's little girlish vocal stylings--the pedophiliac overtones bothered her. I mean, she wasn't suggesting that Lisa is a pedophile, but that we who like her have a pedophiliac side that she appeals to. I don't quite buy that--I think Lisa uses the childlike voice to achieve a kind of emotional honesty that children have because they haven't learned to hide their emotions yet. I'll have to think about this some more. One more thing: I for one wish Lisa was more popular so she could write more songs and perform her own stuff. (It was great seeing her play with the Eels, but I really don't like the Eels. Once was enough.) - --Tom Lucas - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. It is true. But there are also a few teenage girls who would say the same thing concerning the Backstreet boys. "Oh, everybody else just likes it when they pose & shake their butts on stage, but, I like them for their deep emotional lyrics." The Capitol version of Happiness was her only attempt at commercial music. Her 4AD releases are simply not commercial, and were never meant to be commercial, and it's a little unrealistic to expect Lisa to send a stadium full of fans into a screaming frenzy with "Wood Floors" or "A Psychopath." ===== http://www.geocities.com/bradleybee Make a great connection at Yahoo!
