The Cocteau Twins were always popular with big music-stars (who knew what music was all about), like Prince and Madonna, and when citing their admiration for a specific band, the most die-hard fans will most likely check out some of it. It seems as if Lisa is very popular with other musicians, btw! s - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. I have gotten friends to buy Beth Orton because Madonna likes her and have gotten friends to buy Lisa because she played on at least one Indigo Girls record. I know I've purchased CDs because some more mainstream Rolling Stone variety artist has mentioned them. A great example is picking up Robert Johnson (delta blues) after hearing Eric Clapton talk about him. More frequently, I've noticed songwriting credits on some (gasp!) country albums that have caused me to seek out the songwriter's albums, which are generally superior to what Music Row on Nashville puts out. I saw Lucinda Williams as a songwriter on a Mary Chapin Carpenter album. I love to hear about the "artist's artists," the people who popular musicians listen to, and make an effort to at least check out a song on Napster. (Not to open up a can of worms about the merits or faults of Napster, but I downloaded some Eels songs and after a few listens am desperately trying to get to the record store for a few CD purchases.) Furthermore, bassist Jeff Ament, in an interview I came across, mentioned Blake had produced "a Lisa Germano record I really liked". Are there many/any other luminaries of the Rolling Stone front cover variety who have publicly expressed their admiration for Lisa Germano? More importantly, does name-dropping by a very commercially successful figure ever lead some of their fans to check out the name-dropped, more obscure artist/band? (for the millionth time). the cool peeps know and love her though, but not as much as i do. apart from my dutch eels friends, whom i gently forced to buy her stuff.. she's so great. it's a pity this list is only 3% alive. the main reason i'm still here is cos i'm to lazy to unsubscribe, and the occasional off topic message once a month isn't that annoying. love you all. kleinemans, your eels loving bug - -------------------------------- gonna walk walk walk ten more blocks+the one in my brain - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
