Well, I'm one of them. I've had a problem with it for 18 years to varying degrees, most of which have been without dilligent therapy or treatment because I had no health insurance. I had to rely on public clinics for treatment, and it was difficult to make any significant progress with therapy because of the high turnover in the counseling staff (they obviously don't pay very well). I still have a problem with depression though the way it affects the functioning of my day-to-day life has changed somewhat over past bouts. >So, just for the newsgroupy thing is listening >to Lisa Germano when you're clinically depressed good or bad? I'd say it really depends on the individual in question. For myself, her music -- as well as that of a few other artists -- often allows me to express my feelings by acting as a sort of springboard. I can use it to relate to what I'm feeling and help get my point across if I'm trying to talk to someone about how I'm feeling. This is assuming, of course, I'm in a frame of mind where I feel like talking. Sometimes I simply "shut down." I wouldn't say that her music pulled me out of a depression -- it hasn't -- but it has given me a voice at some times when I needed it. It would take me forever to expand on this fully, but the bottom line here is that I'm an advocate of "whatever works." If one is in a serious depression and listening to her music -- or that of any artist -- helps one cope in some way, I say go for it. If one is receiving some sort of talk therapy or counseling, it might be a good thing to let the counselor know about it. If it hits too close to home, as KevKorm said it did for him sometimes, then it's probably not a good idea to listen to her while in a depressive state. It's easy for me to say this because I'm in a "level" period, but one has to be careful to notice how certain things affect his or her moods, and if you find that you're wallowing in things that corellate with your depression, it's a hard cycle to break. - -- Tim - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
