I'm sure it is not as clear-cut as I remember it, but there was a time, back in the misty days of the late sixties, when people really did go to concerts to listen to music. They did not go to make noise and yell during any/every quiet passage. Did not yammer at each other incessantly. Were not focused on themselves, as scene-makers and hell-raisers, but focused on the music. And really listened. Lost themselves in it. And did not drink, which only dulls and senses and makes people even more self-centered. Plenty of drugs, sure. But that only tightened the music's hold. Absorbed and speechless. Can anyone remember when audiences would let a song end, even savor a moment of (often stunned) silence, before applauding? The only concert experiences I have had recently that had that level of audience attention and respect was seeing the Rachaels (twice). Small, devotional audiences, and they head-lined. - -Jeff P. - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address. Think of how much better audiences would be today if they just put down their Belvedere martini's and just smoked hash! As for generalization, I really don't think we need to go to the extreme of avoiding those "of any kind". I think that would stifle a lot of useful discourse. To be avoided, however, are those generalizations that are unfounded or unfair. As to whether my remark regarding the relative likelihood of hearing loss among senior citizens falls into those latter categories, you could investigate the matter for yourself. (although cigarette smoking is about as disgusting of a habit as there is, but it is legal) anyway, the last time Lisa played in Boston, there were SO many ignorant people there it wasn't funny. All that could be heard during her piano songs was LOUD chatter coming from everywhere. I thought to myself "If you aren't here to listen to her, then go some place else to get drunk and socialize, why pay a cover when you arent even there to enjoy her performance?" At one point I got so aggravated with this verbal defecation that was spouting forth from facial colons all around, that in between songs I yelled at the top of my lungs, something like "WOULD YOU ALL SHUT THE FUCK UP AND HAVE SOME RESPECT, THERE'S SOMEONE ONSTAGE TRYING TO PERFORM!!!!!" To this Lisa just smiled and said "oh, it's alright" However, you could clearly see she was annoyed with it herself, as were lots of other people who applauded my outburst. It's one thing to yak at a loud concert where the music is louder than than idle chatter, BUT its just plain ignorant and disrespectful to talk during such a performance as hers. I never understood why people can't shut their face for an hour or so and just enjoy a concert. (this happens at the movies all the time, but thats another story) I think MANY people that were there that night were there just to be there. This happens a lot. People can be SO ignorant at concerts. Another example was at a Black Sabbath concert I was at a few summers ago, some ignorant bitch was on her boyfriends shoulders blocking the view of myself and many others. I threw an empty cardboard cup at her to get her attention because I was about 5 rows behind her. When she turned around, I politely smiled and motioned for her to disembark from her pedastal, to this she flipped me off! So, I went and grabbed a security guard, who immediately told this piece of white trash to get down or get out. She turned to look at me and I smiled. We have to remember that ignorance is everywhere. All we can do is try to deal with it in any way we can, without causing any real commotion ourselves, for then we are ignorant as well. - -RIBri - ------- The Ectophile's Guide to Good Music: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/ - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of computers, they would all get AOL accounts and send unsub messages to the list address.
