Gerald (?) mentioned : Aimee Mann,Radiohead Air Aimee Mann is one of my all-time favorites. For those of you into Radiohead, you should check out Unbelievable Truth. That's Thom Yorke's brother on guitar/vocals. The album Almost Here is absolutely splendid. A friend of mine loaned me an Air bootleg recently - I dig it. Things I'm listening to: Saint Etienne - Good Humor (Poppier than their previous stuff; it's very very good) Old 97's (these guys sound like punk band mastering country/western; incredibly fun to see live) Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (deserves all the accolades it's garnered. She never fails to impress me.) Melissa Ferrick - Everything I Need Ivy - Apartment Life Frank & Walters - Grand Parade (this and the ivy album are brilliant pop; hey, I like pop) Beth Orton (I haven't heard the new album yet, but her first was my favorite of '97) Damian thegeniusiwas@hotmail.com "If you love something you should never set it free. Nothing like asking people about their music to start a thread. I was content just reading but I did want to comment on a couple that have been mentioned... mentioned by colleen (battigirl): > *scarnella - scarnella > (carla bozulich & nels cline from the geraldine fibbers dragging out every > conceivable guitar sound, and utilising children's toys for vocal > manipulation) This really is an amazingly wonderful thing and it was barely reviewed or place on many people's best-of lists. It was sorta released and left out there. Carla Bozulich is to me one of the true geniuses we have... she lays every emotion bare and is one of the few writers who can make me bawl and laugh out loud at the same time and she has a gorgeous voice *and* a talent for playing with people who are extremely talented. I always wonder, as a Lisa fan, if there's any crossover between the fandoms and a while back, on the Geraldine Fibbers list when it became known that the Fibbers' violinist quit, I suggested that Lisa join their tour... Carla's arrangements for the Fibbers call for the violin to be used as a beautiful instrument and also beautifully psychotic. It would have been an interesting work-for-hire gig for Lisa... a lot more than for the Pumpkins or John M. Anyway, the Fibbers sound is a lot different (but not) from Lisa, but since anyone on this list is into challenging music and intelligent lyrics, they should check out the Fibbers' albums "Lost Somewhere Between The Earth and My Home" and "Butch." The Scarnella duet album with Nels, I think, tho, would really appeal to the Lisa sensibility... lots of fun noises... music that goes from lush to odd, gorgeous vocals and even a song about a cat! Which brings me to the other disc I wanted to mention... I can't even imagine a Lisa fan not loving Moon Pix by Cat Power. It's dense and stark at the same time and so soulful. Chan Marshall's voice sends chills down my spine. Okay, those are just my opinions and I never post on this list but I felt like I had to chime in or burst...
