I'm visiting friends in NYC and I was wondering what music stores there are worth checking out while I'm here. The only ones I been in charges 18$ for cds I can get at home for 13$. Is this just the way it is or are there decent places somewhere? I know higher cost of living and all that crap but.. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Some favorites: Other Music 15 E. 4th Street (ironically across from Tower Records) is a great little store with a large selection, a used record bin and good music from a number of genres. And they're real cheap. In the West Village it's a good idea to just walk down Bleecker Street west from 6th Ave. You'll run into a number of fairly decent stores including Kim's Underground at 350 Bleecker, Rebel Rebel at 319 Bleecker and Generations at 210 Thompson. A real good store is Second Coming on 235 Sullivan Street... between (I think) Bleecker and Third. Also, just go to St Mark's Place on the block that 8th St. becomes between 1st and 2nd Aves. Lots of stores, some fairly cheap, interesting scenery around them. Telling you how to get to these shops is a little difficult if you've never been to NY. If you have any web access at all there's a nice, outdated listing at http://members.aol.com/toomuchjoy/recrevnyc.html except some of the stores no longer exist and the author has some dubious opinions on some of the better shops, including some subway directions. To get to Other Music, the best way is to take the N or the R to 8th St and walk down Broadway to 4th until you see Tower Records. (It'll skip some numbers.) Other is on the Other side of the street. You can also take that same subway to St Mark's. Just ask for directions when you get off the subway. To get to the shops on Bleecker, take the A, C or E or F to W. 4th Street and, as I said walk down 6th until you hit Bleecker and then walk west. Or call the stores and they'll give you better directions. Please don't get lost or mugged or I'll feel guilty.
