I would just like to voice my frustration with the critical music press in general at this point. I went to this site listed below thinking "at last, a decent, thoughtful, analytical look at my favorite record of 1998 so far and my favorite Lisa record ever (which says a lot about where it stands, generally, in my estimation). And what do I find? Not much really. First of all, this reviewer only gives Slide a 78% and then proceeds to support his number with a few paragraphs of the some of the most mind numbingly obtuse writing ever to pass for rock journalism. But at least he paid attention to it. Rolling Stone and SPin have both ignored it, AP gave it four stars but didn't actually talk about the record much. On the Web, Salon (too hip for you, gentle reader) dissed Lisa as a "raw nerve" while giving the critical nod to Sonic Youth, who have been going downhill for years (actually I thought they hit rock bottom with Experimental Trash Jet Set and No Star). Ira Robbins (venerable sage of Trouser Press fame whose opinions I generally respect) has also done this. what's up with these people? While in my heart I appreciate that Lisa is only known to us I learned today she works in a bookstore and I felt so...bad. Sonic Youth don't have to work in bookstores. All I know is I long for an incisive record review. But I do have one positive thing to say: go to www.liveconcerts.com and find lisa's recording. It's in Real Audio, so be prepared. Her version of reptile there is amazing. "I do not take drugs. I am drugs." Dali Rob. Look at it this way, she is not a trendy corporate puppet either. I have always been a big fan of underground music. Whether she wants to make it big or not, I think she is happy doing what she is doing, and getting the response she is from it. That is SO much more than many people will EVER accomplish. Sonic Youth do not work, because they play commercial music. If Lisa starts recording more radio / MTV friendly music, I am sure things will change for her as well. Personally, I hope she continues to play music from her heart, even if it means working at a bookstore the rest of her life. - -Brian - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ End of sycophant-digest V3 #82 ****************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to sycophant-owner@smoe.org
