To all those who wish to debate Mellencamp's sincerity: I have doubted the man and essentially stopped listening to his records (except Human Wheels [his best] and some of the Lonesome Jubilee) ever since he toured about a year ago to theaters, charging prices in the triple digits. From Barbra Streisand I expect this kind of egocentric, insulting behavior, but from the man who once (long ago, it seems) proclaimed himself the champion of the american farmer (and heartland, more generally)? It's a bit of a shock. I thought the theatre tour was nice. it was the "coziest" show he's done in AGES. The prices here were only in the double digits. Of course once the scum bag "professional" ticket scalper stores (which make me puke) got hold of all the good seats, the prices shot through the roof into the triple digits. That reminds me has anyone even got any tickets within the first 5 rows to see any band in the past several years, by simply calling in or standing in line? That's one real shitty business, but if it weren't for the suckers who paid their ludicrous prices, I guess they'd be out of business real quick. He literally reintroduced the "feel" of bluegrass & country music back into rock single-handedly. Spontaneity? Like "Jackie O"? How audacious that a "major artist" should put what amounts to noodling with a Casio-80 on an album. - -----Original Message----- From: Maude2400@aol.com [SMTP:Maude2400@aol.com] Sent: Monday, July 20, 1998 6:38 PM To: sycophant@smoe.org Subject: sycophant Re: Mellencamp I couldn't agree more with Matt. The "Cougar's" success continues to amaze me; I find him lacking in sponaneity, innovation, and most of all: sincerity. I really dislike his music and am unhappy when I can hear remnants of it in some of Lisa's work. Were they once a twosome? I've wondered whether or not he might be that "Little Cowboy?" - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 14:08:55 -0700 From: Marc Tobolski Subject: RE: sycophant Re: MELLENCAMP/what song? Sincerity is to be measured by how much an artist charges for their services? The "starving artist" is merely starving and quite often as not, not an artist. Is Van Gogh a hack now that his paintings sell for $65 million? Does the music sound less sweet on CD for you when you know somewhere, someone else paid $150 for the ability to hear JM play live? Then methinks the problem does not lie with JM... - -----Original Message----- From: Rob Hermann, Wash U, History [SMTP:rhermann@artsci.wustl.edu] Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 1998 10:36 AM To: sycophant@smoe.org Subject: Re: sycophant Re: MELLENCAMP/what song? NO, but sometimes cool venues will do special stuff; for instance, just by filling out a form, my friend got to mail-order tickets to see Tori Amos at the Greek Theater in LA. She bought one for me, and they're second row center -- better than anything that ever went on sale. --Matt J - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 21:33:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt J Subject: Re: sycophant "Slide" Here's the track list: 1. Way Below the Radio 2. No Color Here 3. Tomorrowing 4. Electrified 5. Slide 6. If I Think of Love 7. Crash 8. Wood Floors 9. Turning Into Betty 10. Guillotine 11. Reptile It's got a slightly blurry shot of a butterfly on the front cover; the album artwork is typical 4ad with blurry/close-up shots of random stuff. Also a nice picture of Lisa; I think she looks pretty with short hair, although maybe not quite as lost. Did I mention it's rillyrillyrilly good? I haven't picked a favorite yet, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE #1 and #8. I especially love #1 because it's the first one I heard, and as soon as I heard her voice all I could think of was, "Geez, I was a little afraid of being disappointed but DAMN she just gets better and better!" Anyways, go buy it. --Matt J PS also #6 is amazing, especially for something that might ostensibly be considered a "love song." - ------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe sycophant ------------------------------ End of sycophant-digest V3 #63 ****************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to sycophant-owner@smoe.org
