NEIL YOUNG, SARA MCLACHLAN, COUNTING CROWS, STEVE FORBERT (WHO I KNOW), OLD PRINCE, AFGHAN WHIGS, smashing (you know who's)-I whispered that one for you guys, JEAN BEAUVIOR, BRUCE, KATE BUSH, PINK FLOYD, GARY MOORE, CANNONBALL ADDERLY, RED HOUSE PAINTERS ("Songs for a blue guitar" is a bee-u-t-full album-, you won't be dissapointed), PAVAROTTI (singing anything, even the phonebook), KISS, TERRY CALLIER, ELTON, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, BOSTON, PETER GABRIEL (Is "SO" one off the greatest albums of all time or what?", JOHN GORKA, OLD RICHARD AND LINDA THOMPSON, CHEAP TRICK, DIRE STRAITS, FOO FIGHTERS, JIM CROCE (yes, that guy), COREY HART, JOY DIVISION and so much more but you'll stop reading if I continue to go on! MARK (the old man) PS: Not because he's a friend, but any Steve Forbert from "Alive on arrival (1977)" through "Mission of the crossroad palms (1995)" is music that's so good, it's a crime if you go through your life and never taste it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 May 1998 22:31:39 -0400 From: Jason and Jill Greshes Subject: Re: sycophant Re: can we get some meaningful subject lines up here please? And it's nice to know that that thing about teenagers being overly sensitive is just a cliche too. ;) Sorry, but the "I love the Pumpkins and hate Genesis" seemed about on the same level as: I'm a big Pixies fan, this Velvet Underground stuff is shit. I love Manson, who's this Iggy Pop asshole? Man, I was waiting for Tori's video on MTv and they played a video from this wierd Kate Bush chick. The Beatles? Wasn't that the band John Lennon was in before Wings? :) Once Peter Gabriel left Genesis they turned into a pop band, and a rather wimpy one at that, but the Pumpkins wouldn't exist without the Gabriel-era records, and Corgan would probably be the first to tell you that. From the Genesis? You mean Phil Collins? comment it was easy to assume you'd never heard of Lamb or Supper's Ready. If you > put it in that context, I just want to trash your emails or try to get you > off the list. Heh...I'm the one person you *can't* get off the list. I have no problem with people not knowing much about music--I run a bunch of music lists so that people *can* learn. What I do have a problem with is people saying that "x" or "y" suck without knowing the background. I'm tempted to unplug this list b/c of all the "pumpkins suck" "genesis sucks" "who the hell is Jim Croce?" stuff. And it seemed particularly silly to support one band while slamming one of that band's main building blocks, or to dislike a band just because it has gotten big Mtv play and sales. (I don't care how many kids listen to Pumpkins--I don't like them b/c Corgan's voice sounds to me like an otter giving birth. Take away his voice and their stuff isn't bad.) Remember, a couple of people were nicely trying to convey some of that knowledge and the response they got was: >are you guys serious about liking genesis? like, as in phil collins?.. me >and my dad used to spend hours on end making fun of that band when i was >like 9 and they were on mtv... If you run this list, then you understand the fickle and often subtle driftings of people's musical tastes. You have a point about the reactionary tendencies of people with regards to music, but that is how we learn. The fact that some have not an entirely fleshed version of music history, or the fact that you run this list does give you license to play "superiority over the fools." I suggest that if you run this list, you have the responsibility to steer people back in the direction that it is originally intended for, *not* to join in the fray and make us upset and turned off to music. I am also often plagued by indie-itis and find myself getting turned off to something way cool like cornershop just because it gets attention. I need to remind myself to be happy for Jen Trynin or Tracy Bonham when they move away from smokey Boston basements into the big time. What hurts is when we see a melting, a loss of substance by that harsh ride through the mainstream. That is what my fellow music lovers are reacting to. We have all bemoaned the fact that all Peter Gabriel sounds the same now, so we all understand. If you believe someone (like me) needs clarification, I am the first to admit it, but it seems to me that you are going about it all wrong. Please dont shut down the list or shut down adrienne, i speak for myself. I think killing the list would be a move that none of us would be too thrilled with. So, we all play it cool, and keep this up. I love this stuff, and want to keep on keepin' on. I invite anyone to add or comment or refute, I am open. keep on rockin' in the free world with much love for music gabriel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 00:47:07 EDT From: Venmlegion Subject: Re: sycophant oddities WOW! VENOM POSSESSED DEATH VIOLENCE NWA (niggas with attitudes) CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (and his magic band) FRANK ZAPPA (w/ and w/out the MOTHERS) CANNED HEAT DEAD KENNEDYS CIRCLE JERKS THE MEATMEN THE DEAD MILKMEN I also listen to a lot of music that I was listening to when I was a kid like the GRATEFUL DEAD, CCR (creedence clear water revival) the DOORS, LED ZEPPELIN, the DOOBIES, BLACK SABBATH, CROCE, CHAPIN, J. GEILS, RUSH... and stuff I was listening to at 14 yrs old, like METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, and IRON MAIDEN (80-85 only) (before these bands all wimped out) I'm 28 now and still listen to all of it, oh yeah how could I forget about JOHN MELLENCAMP, if had not been for him, I would never have bothered to check out LISA!!!! oh yeah and by the way to who ever said john lennon was in wings....it was paul not john. I guess you were just joking right??? Also let's try not to be so cruel to one another. Maybe we should stick to talking strictly LISA if people can't handle being criticized a little. ------------------------------ End of sycophant-digest V3 #32 ****************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to sycophant-owner@smoe.org
