Pumpkins Tap Ex-Mellencamp Violinist For Tour
Expanded Pumpkins touring band will include a keyboardist,
percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Germano.
Staff Writer Chris Nelson reports:

When the Smashing Pumpkins hit the road this summer, their band will
include one-time John Mellencamp fiddle player Lisa Germano and two or
three additional musicians, including a keyboardist and a
percussionist, according to a source close to the band.

Earlier this month, the alt-rock superstars confirmed that they had
hired former Mellencamp skinsman Kenny Aronoff to keep the beat on
their summer tour in support of the forthcoming Adore (June 2) album.
Now the Chicago-based group has tapped additional side-players Germano
along with several thus-far unidentified musicians to join the
Pumpkins on the tour as well.

"Lisa will be a multi-instrumentalist," said Gayle Fine, spokesperson
for the Pumpkins, noting that, in addition to violin, Germano may also
play guitar and keyboards with the band.

The Pumpkins are currently ensconced in a Chicago rehearsal space
preparing for the outing, which, beginning in May, will take them
through Europe, Australia and Japan before they return to the United
States in July. The band will then join the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons Of
Rock Developing Everywhere) tour for a handful of dates.

Fine could not say whether the Smashing Pumpkins enlisted Germano
through their newly forged relationship with Aronoff. In addition to
playing with Germano in Mellencamp's band, Aronoff has also performed
on tracks from all four of Germano's solo albums, beginning with On
The Way Down From Moon Palace (1991).

Germano hooked up with Mellencamp in the late 1980s, lending her
violin to the heartland singer's Lonesome Jubilee (1987), Big Daddy
(1989) and Human Wheels albums and later contributing to vocals to
Dance Naked.

With Moon Palace, released independently, Germano extended her country
and folk roots. Her subsequent albums -- including the most recent,
Excerpts From A Love Circus (1996) -- have explored darker territory
than her earlier work. Last year, she joined epic abstractionists
Giant Sand for the Slush album, recorded under the name OP8.

Just got off the phone with the lovely Lisa Germano, she is presently in
Chicago playing with the Smashing Pumpkins.  Yes that right.  Playing a
little fiddle, a little piano, little vocal, mandolin, you get the picture.
She is the color girl.  She will be touring with them through Europe.
Also release date for her next recording "Slide" is July 21st.

                             It's good to know that the record is so iminent
because I've worn a hole in "Reptile" over the past few months. I hope that
song is an example of what's to come because it's absolutely awesome. If the
rest of the album matches up to that song it'll easily be her best yet...

       At first I was'nt sure what to think about the Pumpkins news because
personally I'm not a very big fan of Bill "Uncle Fester" Corgan and his
overblown nonsene (well "Siamese Dream" was okay but the last one was
terrible), but the more I think about it and the more I hear the better it
seems. I mean, it seems as though she'll be playing a farely prominent role in
the whole setup and with that being so the amount of new fans she could
attract playing in front of up to thousands every night would make it
worthwhile alone. Her name will be mentioned all over the media and throughout
the Pumpkins mailing list - i.e. the coverage will be generally huge - so even
if just one out of every ten Pumpkins fans goes out and checks out her record
as a result then....well, let's just say that there will never be rumours of
her working in a bookstore again...

      Anyway, one thing I know for sure is that the London Pumpkins gig is
going to be broadcast live on MTV UK on May 23rd as a part of it's "Five Night
Stand" promotion so we'll be able to see exactly how she fits in then. Should
be very interesting...
