Substantive Lisa discussion! Jonathan, you raise an interesting point that not many Lisafreaks (can there be a word for us?) are willing to admit; that there ways in which the Capitol version of everybody' favorite record may be better, at times, than the 4AD version. I know that the capitol version will always have a special place in my heart because it was introduction to Lisa, the sheer pop appeal of Dresses and the rock(ist?) version of Puppet ARE enticing, and rightly so. Because what makes Lisa so great is not only her pop instincts or her dark subject matter but how she weaves the two together. I often think of the capitol version and the 4ad version as entirely different records, as different places in Lisa's artistic development, and that way I don't have to compare the two. A good way to see (or more accurately, hear) what I'm talking about is to listen to the Inconsiderate Bitch EP, if that's at all possible, because it really is a marked point of transition between capitol and 4ad. But you're right. Regardless of the evil purposes Mellencamp puts him too, Kenny Aronoff is one of the great drummers in rock today, and we should applaud those points where Lisa uses him. Although I think she puts him to best effect on "Stars", personally. Can I just say how much Mellencamp bugs me at this point? "The Best that I Could Do"? Yeah, okay, whatever. rob Robin Hermann Washington University "There was no want of anything to him Department of History that wanted not money". rhermann@artsci.wustl.edu --John Stow, 1601 Office: (314) 935-7341 (commenting on the 1596-7 inflation) http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~rhermann On Thu, 19 Mar 1998 CRFRUNDMADL@crf.cuis.edu wrote: > Hi folks, > > I feel like I'm one of the few people around who prefer Lisa's Capitol Records > release of "Happiness" to the 4AD version. Anybody else? I agree with you, but Lisa herself seems to prefer the 4AD version. So if any disagreement breaks out, I think that we get clobbered. :-) It's always Dark.
