Not bad but pretty much your basic wanna-be-trendy hipster kind of thing. Does anyone know if Liz handpicks these openers herself? Anyway, Liz looked especially sexy last night in a pair of incredibly high heeled red shoes, black stockings and a great looking dress (sorry I'm really not good at describing this kind of thing -- but the point is she looked amazing). It was really hot in the music hall last night and Liz commented on it a few times, "Note to management, you might want to open a door or something." and something about how we should all "strip down." She was laughing about it but I was really hot so I can imagine she must have been sweltering on stage. The show itself was typical post Liz Phair era Liz, professional but bland. Her setlist was identical to the ones she played in other cities on this tour with the exception of Uncle Alveraz. She invited two girls from the audience to sing backup on Flower (who were really good by the way -- that backup part is really hard to sing and this it the first time I heard someone nail it), blah blah. We've seen this all before and it's pretty tired at this point. I don't know why she doesn't mix it up a little . . . she always seems pretty confident playing some of her old chestnuts when people request them . . . why not throw different ones into the setlist every night? I get that she basically plays the songs people want to hear, but I think everyone there last night would have gone crazy if she played . . . I don't know . . . Dance of the Seven Veils? . . . Shane?? . . . Go on Ahead??? do these songs even exist anymore? Anyway, someone else will have to fill you in on the encore as there was a serious blizzard going on outside and I was really afraid the trains were gonna shut down. Plus, I'm old. All in all not a bad night but more for nostalgic value than anything else . . . too bad because I happen to think Funstyle is wonderful. This was the first time I brought a friend unfamiliar with Liz to one of her shows. As we walked into the blizzard I asked her what she thought, "Well, I was really surprised, I didn't really think you were into this kind of music." "What do you mean," I asked. "Well, it's just like pop music." My throat tightened as she continued, "kind of an indie Sheryl Crow." With that the door opened to a full-on blizzard. Unfortunately, not even the cold and snow could numb my pain.
