Again, it's in flac (lossless is all the allow at Dime). The encore is missing--something about logistics(?). The 6/25 recording sounds amazing. http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=203230 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2008 08:26:50 -0500 From: "Derek Donovan" Subject: [support-system] Re: Girly Sounds This is the most complete set of Girly Sound songs that I know of, cleaned up considerably from the awesome posting at girlysound.com: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E2VMYK07 These are waaaaaaaay better than those horrible Bliss & Fetish things that dude ripped everyone off by selling years ago. It also includes Secretly Timid for comparison. From the best I can tell, my cassettes are fourth- or fifth-generation, and these are all better. d ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2008 00:13:34 -0500 From: "Steve Kisko" Subject: Re: [support-system] help for the musically ignorant On Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:25 AM, wrote: > OK, can some one help me understand Say You?? Is that what you're thinking of? Do you have the actual CD Reissue or did you just download it? "Say You" is from 1992, it's a cover of a Ken Boothe song. John Henderson had this to say about the track: - ------------------------- "Say You" is a cover of the rocksteady classic by Ken Boothe. *Liz* became enamored of this song, which she heard following my repeated plays of another song on the same album, Roy Shirley's "Hold Them". I had an arrangement worked out in my head of the latter song, which I think would have sounded nice with *Liz*'s vocals. The song itself is a bit rough, and Roy Shirley - quite like *Liz* - has a rather inexact approach to pitch. It was my 'plan' to have *Liz* cover this song, and so my friend Tony and I worked out a musical approach which would have been really great - funny and sexy and quite a bit different than a lot of other things, but something which would have served as a nice foil. But *Liz* decided to cover the Ken Boothe song instead. Being fanatical reggae purists, this didn't make a whole lot of sense to Tony and me, since the harmonies alone would be tough to ace, but an attempt was made with Tony on bass and Brad on drums. I don't like it much and I'm surprised to see it reissued! - --------------------------- Unlike John Henderson (and yourself, I guess), I think "Say You" is a real highlight of the reissue. I've listened to it probably 30 times in the past 3 or 4 days since I got the CD, and that's about 3 times as much as I've played the other 2 bonus tracks. (Great singing/harmonizing, lovely vocal melody, pretty tight playing, fantastic mixing & arranging, especially with the wacky delay effects on some of the vocals.) It's certainly not supposed to be considered part of the album itself at all - -- the original song cycle ends quite definitively after the 18th track, then there's an entire minute of silence, and then the bonus tracks begin. I don't have any problem separating the main set from the "encore" in my head - -- do other people have issues with this? Then again, I don't have an iPod so I don't know what it might be like to randomly hear "Say You" right after "Explain It To Me" or before "Canary" or something like that. Although, actually, yes I do... because I find myself skipping to "Say You" whenever I feel like it. > I get that they wanted to add bonus material, but with all of the Girly > Sound stuff to pick > from, Say You doesn't fit the album, the feel, the time period of EIG for > me. Listening to the new EIG straight thru it just jars me. I am sure > there is a great reason why it is on the new EIG, but it doesn't make any > sense to me at all. Can someone Explain It To Me?? They didn't have a ton of Girly Sound material to pick from. Really, just two Girly Sound songs surviving the original sessions were left off the finished album: "Wild Thing" and "Ant In Alaska." I think all the other re-recorded Girly Sound songs actually ended up on the first release of Guyville. As for the idea of including actual Girly Sound tracks (from Liz's original 4-track recordings): I gather from things that Brad Wood has said that the idea was to use all the best completed Guyville-era tracks they could find for this reissue. Girly Sound is considered a pre-Guyville era, and an entirely separate recording project, yes? I think all they had were 2 instrumentals (one, left off the reissue, for which Liz couldn't claim sole songwriting credit, according to other things John Henderson said), "Say You," "Ant In Alaska," and "Wild Thing." It seems like the cover song, which ended up being "Say You," wasn't quite in the first heat for inclusion on the album that was to become Guyville; I gather it was more of a lark, what we would think of as B-side material (which, nicely, it ended up becoming). I could be wrong about the last point, though. John Henderson, what say you? One last thing: I think the DVD rules! I'm such a sucker for this stuff, I actually LIKE that you have to mess with the volume and watch the whole thing twice to catch everything that's being said. And the bit where Liz goes through her mementos and flips through old letters and photos is more freeze-frame-worthy than Porky's was when I was 12. Did anyone else notice all the little sound and visual effects Liz added throughout? ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V10 #65 ************************************
