Here's mine: The first of the two New York shows showed how far Liz Phair has come in the 15 years since Exile in Guyville was released. In front of a packed Hiro Ballroom and with dozens of Phair phans just feet away from her, Liz plowed through the entire Exile in Guyville album with increasing confidence. Her resolve to slowly pan the crowd as "Canary" started particularly exemplified this. The emotion of the night got to her quickly. I believe it was after "Glory" when she proclaimed this would be her favorite show ever. Maybe it was the proximity to all the people who knew every line of every song and hung on every word and note she played. Not that there weren't remnants of the "old Liz." Her backup guitarist had to help her plug in properly during "Mesmerizing." And there were some bum chords during that song that were later explained when Liz said she tried to get through the gig without clipping her nails but she couldn't do it. So before "Fuck and Run" and after a sort of unsuccessful attempt at biting one nail off, a clipper was produced from backstage and she promptly went to work trimming the nails on her left hand. There were some exceptional notes and strong vocal work coming from Liz on stage. Not the slick pop sounds from recent years, but just a solid representation of an album that means so much to so many. Particular highlights were "Girls! Girls! Girls!," which attracted applause from her band on stage and "Gunshy," which faded to "Gunshy/wife" whispers from both Liz and the crowd. Liz told the audience that she always kind of thought of Guyville as a New York record and she considers New York to be her second home -- a sentiment that went over very well with the crowd. NY showed her both sides of that coin though as catcallers increasingly tried to become part of the show between songs. An early "do you know how much we love you" led to a funny "No, I can't feel that" from Liz. Which led to more and more comments. No matter, Liz proclaimed it to be her fave gig of all-time and I have to agree. When do you go to a show and truly love every single track? paige- - --- On Thu, 6/26/08, Kenneth Lee wrote: From: Kenneth Lee Subject: [support-system] where are the Chicago / NYC reviews?
