My favorite surprise in the new ones (to me -- the ones not on the cassettes I've had since 1995 or so) is "Shatter." I think this has to be the best example of Brad (and Liz, of course) changing a song so radically, giving a totally different cast to the lyrics. "Thrax" is another particular favorite -- and one I'm glad ended up in a rewrite in the long run. Over all, it makes me remember how much I used to listen to the old GS tapes. In fact, I'm sure for a while there I was hearing them more than the studio albums. Here's a question for everyone: I'm trying to figure out which other songs still exist out there. The ones I have (from Juvenilia and the Secretly Timid boot): California South Dakota Batmobile Easy Can't Get Out of What I'm Into Beg Me Flower Go, Speed Racer, Go! (aka Speed Racer) It's In My Kiss Sometimes A Dream Stratford-On-Guy Wild Thing Over all, my favorites are still "Can't Get Out," "Beg Me" and "Wild Thing." Interesting they weren't on Ken's new discovery. Ken, First off thanks are in order for getting your hands on this wonderful find. I must say that I was not that impressed nor 'into' Somebody's Miracle I though I would be. Maybe it will grow on me in time. My original Girlysound CD was provided to me by someone on this list (sorry I've forgotten who - it's been years) and is, I'm sure, as good (bad?) as everyone else's. Therefore I've never really been thrilled to listen to it either. Other than Juvenalia, nothing has clicked sonically. I must say that I was not really thrilled to start downloading the new stuff either - *until* I started listening to the tracks. Wow! First off they sound much better than I though they would. Secondly, the songs really have a Liz feel to them, a presence that seems lacking on the earlier GS recordings. I am more thrilled to hear them than I am Somebody's Miracle right now. I am in the process of running them through audio software Goldwave. I have expanded the dynamic range, boosted the bass and treble, cut the midrange some, edited down the beginning and trailing silence/pops/clicks and reduced the hiss. At this point they sound much better. I suggest (unless you are a true purist) that anyone downloading them for their own CD burning try experimenting with the same process. They sound good to begin with but can be made more listenable (lets face it they were recorded on a 4-track on tape years ago with the inherent hiss and limitations of tape). Anyway a thousand thanks to Ken for unearthing this treasure! DarkSide oftheMoon Sidenote - Valerie Jane Barry Where are you?
