["Mark J. Foxx" Subject: [support-system] polyester bride (finally!) Whoa, the "Polyester Bride" is so bizarre. I've always thought "Polyester Bride" was the most uncharacteristically bubbly, straight-forwardly catchy song in Liz Phair's pre-2003 catalogue--so much so that I hardly believed that she was wholly responsible for it--and it really threw me off that it was a Girlysound song. Anyway, the Girlysound version is amazing. This is a ridiculous way to describe it, but she seems to "own" it so much more here. It's like an awesome, very surreal Liz Phair cover of her own song. I can't believe how little she actually changed; I thought for sure that at least the bridge had been tacked on by post-motherhood Liz. Anyway, if I didn't learn this from Fiona Apple last year, it's shocking sometimes how different performance and production can make a song. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 14:29:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: Re: [support-system] polyester bride (finally!) - --- "Mark J. I remember her telling David Dye on the World Cafe in 1998 that it was an older song, and I assumed she'd just padded it with the bridge to make it longer and more conventionally structured. IMO, I think the abbreviated version is far more humorous and works better on the whole, although some of the cut verses are interesting (including the unconventional guitar chords). Anyway, I'm stunned that so few people have had anything to say about these treasures. This is by far the best "new" Liz stuff any of us have heard since Comeandgetit (and easily better than that), and who knows if we'll ever be killed again in such a manner (my guess is no). "Miss Mary Mack", anyone? "Valentine"? This shit is GENIUS! Have we so dwindled in number? Are we so uninspired? (Calling all fogies! Calling all fogies!) Maybe once "Shatter" makes its splash...?
