I've been listening to the Loveless album nonstop lately. Here's to hoping Jen has another of her own in her. Here's to hoping >Jen has another of her own in her. The Loveless album is indeed great. "Go" and "Beautiful" still make it onto a lot of the mix CDs I make for friends. Part of me was really happy just to hear Jen singing and playing guitar again, but I, too, am hoping for another album of her own material. There's a thread about the book on the Velvet Rope right now, and I think Chris Willman (Entertainment Weekly writer) said it all when he posted, "I'm still in shock (and horror) that somebody who could make a record that good could just retire altogether." (He was referring to _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_, and while I agree with the sentiment, I also think _Cockamamie_ is phenomenal as well.) As for Jen's book, I'd recommend it to anyone on the list. I don't think you have to be a fan to appreciate her story. The bulk of it covers the four-year period from the bidding war to sign her to when she decided she wanted out of the music business. What happened in between alternates from surreal to heartbreaking; she was poised to be the next big thing, but it never really came together for her. She tells her story with a refreshing lack of self-pity, however; if anything, more often than not, she finds humor in her experiences. She's also a compelling storyteller. I started reading the book last night, thinking I'd spend a couple of hours with it before going to sleep. The next thing I know, it was 8:00 am, and I still would have continued reading it if I could have kept my eyes open any longer. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a book this much. (The icing on the cake is figuring out who's who in the story, since Jen uses pseudonyms for many of the players. Paula Cole, in particular, should be thankful.) I hope this book will reach a wider audience than her music did and that, in turn, some of the people who aren't already fans will be inspired to check out her recordings (and that Warners will reissue _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_. It's absolutely criminal that album is out of print). It really helps to understand her choices so much better. I just love listening to her speak - I like the dialogue better then the songs actually. I also have the Aimee Mann itunes essentials, that one is great as well. I highly recommend both of them - Lani ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V9 #7 **********************************
