Bottom line, she seems to be on the prowl again (nothing new here), but she has tempered her aggressive libido with a vague spiritual appreciation for some sense of universal otherness, even as it may be revealed in ... herself! The title track refers to random passers-by as "Somebody's miracle ... some modern fairy tale. I wish it could happen to me." Unfortunately, Phair seems to identify more closely with the Queen who "likes to sit on her throne," and is thus unavailable for true love. Aw, she's breaking my heart. C'mon, Liz, don't you know the movement you need is on your shoulder or something like that? While Phair's lyrics are consistently rather icky, cloying, weirdly pathetic, the band behind her is entirely competent, like the excellent combo that played all those great Partridge Family hits (before your time). What she really needs is somebody to "Point me in the direction of Albuquerque." Poor thing. Yeah, Liz and I go way back. Like many boys who came of age in the '90s (yeah, I was slow, what of it?), I feel obligated to give her a spin. But at this point her cluelessness is obscuring the potency of "Exile in Guyville", which remains her single, meaningful contribution to the dialogue of popular music. Then again, as a fan of bad music (warble on, Liz!), I'm, like, Liz, you're kind of clueless and kind of gross (in the way that desperate single parents can be), but I'm all for reconciliation (and casual, no-strings encounters), so, you know, if you ever wanna give up on all those other boys, maybe we can do lunch. I'm starting to feel like "Somebody's Miracle", too, if you know what I mean. - -Ken kenmlee@ix.netcom.com MeSmErIzInG - AnOtHeR LiZ PhAiR WeBsItE http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/ ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V8 #161 ************************************
