I'm not going to post more info about the album unless you really want me to because - honestly - I don't want to ruin it for you. I thought the reviewer who wrote that this album was as good as EIG was on crack. After hearing the whole thing now, nope. She's right. For some very opposite reasons and some of the very same reasons EIG is great. It's not like EIG but it is. The best way to describe it is as if Girlysound Liz was locked in the studio with "new LP Album" Liz (stronger vocal skills, better understanding of the process, wants to be as pop star, etc.) and this was the result. I love this album. It's great. It rocks. It kicks ass. I'm in love with Liz Phair as an artist again. This album is Liz- and the "crappy" Promo Squad songs aren't crappy in the context of the album. Is the depth of the writing on those songs Liz's best, I don't think so -but she makes up for it in other places so you can forgive her cuz you get where she's going overall. (Think about if you'd only heard 4 random EIG songs early without the context of the overall album. I remember for a long time I skipped over a few of them until I "got" it because the vocals were so brutal. But in the end you appreciate them all.) I wish every person on this list had a copy of the album already cuz it's killing me that I don't have anyone to talk to about it. (But please don't ask me to copy it for you cuz I'm not interested in going to jail or being sued. I can't - sorry.) I do think that there are some stronger songs that might have made a better single though. I am having a hard time figuring out if it will be commercially successful overall. The only song with words in it you can't play on the radio is Cant Get Out of What I'm Into - and my only criticism of the album overall is that the "school" line just sucks - so it's not that. I think if it's not commercially successful it's more for reasons that Whip Smart wasn't - Liz's music is not traditional pop music. Thanks for the links to Liz's message. Yep, Leap of Innocence is My Mistake. Those are the words - word for word. What keyed me to it was the next verse's chorus talks about "my mistake was that I was already married" and I remembered Jase posting about that a long time ago. Wow. I cut and pasted the words from Liz's message (11/99) below. First verse: I saw John, he looked so sad I want you to know that I feel bad for not making our dreams come true. we had so many dreams, me and you. I want you to know I love you. You're my favorite thing from the past, and all of those nights we spent together, I never had such a blast.... Chorus: Anyone could tell you were my instrument, he said, I understand you. You want to play me. My mistake was thinking I'd already made it. I wanna make a leap of innocence to you. **************************** Yep. That's it. Wow. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Sep 2005 10:04:35 -0400 From: lilrussiangirl@aol.com Subject: [support-system] SM retrospective dvd in the SM DVD retrospective - that is the one from the web - there's a clip where she has on a white dress and 50's hair and it looks like a clip from a play or musical. What is that? Where is it from? Did we miss something -was Liz on Broadway? J/k. Does anyone know? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Sep 2005 11:09:31 -0400 From: Mariam Hamou Subject: [support-system] Re: My mistake I remember that email!! I was beside myself when I got it! I was so excited. I think I'm probably one of the older ones on the list - I've been on this list probably since '97 Mariam ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V8 #110 ************************************
