I'm sure I'm not the only one > who would like to read it... Oh yeah, good call :) Here it is! (Some of the editing -- namely, the placement of the word 'self-titled' in the first sentence -- is a little awkward.... oh well) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/05/AR2005080502044.html The Washington Post, Saturday, August 6, 2005; Page C05 Liz Phair, Going Easy on the Gloss Liz Phair's 2003 glossy pop album, self-titled, branded her as a sellout, and the ongoing debate about her authenticity may never be resolved. But the capacity crowd at the Birchmere on Thursday night didn't seem to care. Fans pestered her with requests ranging from her earliest demo recordings to tracks from that last album. She embraced both sides of her career, whispering an impromptu version of a raunchy song, "Flower," from her first album, "Exile in Guyville," to appease a fan. But when Phair took an applause-o-meter poll to pick a song for her encore, the audience chose her most recent off-color song, "HWC," over any of her earlier material. While the show's acoustic setting forced such older songs as "Supernova" to lose their growl, it made some of the newer ones, removed from their slickly produced studio setting, more palatable. The overly cheesy "Why Can't I?" came across as sweet and sincere, even more so because of the obvious warmth she showed accompanist Dino Meneghin. Phair also previewed several songs from her forthcoming album, "Somebody's Miracle": The title song and the mushy "Everything to Me" may well indicate a continuation of Phair's lovey-dovey pop phase. But with its pensive look at alcoholism, "Table for One" was one of the few songs during which Phair didn't smile. Despite her flip apology ("Even at my ripe old age, I can't promise I won't bum you out!"), the song's sincere sentiment revealed hints of the old Phair beneath her polished exterior. - -- Catherine P. Lewis ) 2005 The Washington Post Company There was a review of Friday's show in another local paper, the Washington Times, which I didn't like nearly as well as my own, but, y'know, I'm biased ;) Here's a link to that one: http://www.washingtontimes.com/entertainment/20050807-092803-8137r.htm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 11:11:57 -0400 From: Jase Subject: Re: [support-system] Somebody's Miracle spoilers lilrussiangirl@aol.com wrote: > Advance copies of the album are out already? ... hmmm ....how long > until they show up on eBay? Word on the LP forum a while back was that it was originallyl titled "Gigalo" -- therefore the song is from a male prostitute's point of view, not a female's. But as Girlysound got passed around the original title got lost or something. My biggest peeve is that years/queers ryhmes, years/school does not. And why would she change this one but leave "with a faggot on her left and a faggot on her right" on "Bouncer's Conversation" on the EP? I still really wanna hear it, though. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V8 #95 ***********************************
