I'd be interested to know what everyone thinks is the Last Great Liz Phair Song. I'd say it was Polyester Bride - poppy yes, but it still tells a story with some real lyrics. From then on everything went downhill, in my opinion. I'd argue that pretty much everything on the _comeandgetit_ EP is great. In particular, both "Jeremy Engle" and "Bouncer's Conversation" can hold their own amongst the best of Liz's work. As for the self-titled album, I think "My Bionic Eyes" and "Friend of Mine" are pretty solid as well. So I've been listening to "Everything to Me" on loop, and that's kinda weird. If it wasn't Liz Phair, I probably wouldn't touch it. And yeah, when I first heard the promo tracks online, I was really more disheartened than I was when I first heard the 4th album. But like the 4th album, I found myself getting the songs stuck in my head and eventually letting them grow on me (I don't even skip "Favorite" anymore, and that was quite a big deal). I think the New York Times article made me feel much better. I'm still sticking to my stance that Liz doesn't owe anything to me... I don't HAVE to like her, and she doesn't HAVE to make music that fits my personal tastes. Luckily, she happens to make even pop music sound good again. After a few years of working at a college radio station and becoming more and more snobby towards mainstream music, I think it's quite a great thing that I don't completely write her off. I think she's still making some good stuff, even if it's slightly fluffy. And I'm so goddamned excited about seeing her at the Birchmere tomorrow night.
