"People get very uptight about staying in a certain genre or not breaking out of your expected style," Phair said. "If I like indie rock, I can't like pop. Or if I'm a pop person, I have no credibility in rock. But for me, I just decided to go farther and take my aesthetic stand stronger." Song titles on the more grown-up Miracle include "Leap of Innocence," "Table for One," "Stars and Planets," "Lazy Dreamer" and first single "Everything to Me," which asks a lover to "take the time to catch me if I fall" while also asking, "Do you really know me at all?" ... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2005 04:31:46 +0000 From: "Ray Murphy" Subject: [support-system] RE: support-system-digest V8 #85 LIZ LIVE!!!: OK, I've been on this list for the past 2 years & read all the rants and raves about Liz. This is the first time I've posted, so I've got a lot to say. First, it seems there is a lot of controversy about the direction Liz has taken in the last few years. While I (or anyone who's opinion doesn't really matter anyway) can argue either side, I won't. WHY?, because LIZ IS BEST ENJOYED LIVE!!! Maybe I'm more into seeing bands/musicians live than most, I've gotta say, Liz is a great live performer. I saw her last year (3x... I'm either lucky or a loser), and was totally bowled over. I just got back from her Philly show, and I have nothing but positive things to say. World Cafe Live is probably the best venue I've ever been in. I can only imagine that all of the places she is touring this summer are as good or better (especially Joe's Pub NYC). It was a very intimate, very social setting. My only gripe is that it was a little quiet a fact she pointed out a few times. Liz did do her best to open the crowd to sing-a-long and shout out requests for songs. I'm sorry, but I was just too hammered to make a proper setlist, but I hope someone else can. I CAN say that she played songs encompassing her entire career, from girlysounds to the new album, and including rarities. She seemed totally in love with the fact she had the freedom/ability to play almost any song she and the audience wanted. Although I've seen a lot of negativity about Dino on this list, I've never doubted his ability as a talented guitar guy. He's great with an electric, even better acoustically. I've seen a post about a "dis-junction" between him & Liz on this tour. While I don't think it was correctly referencing his guitar ability (or love-loss with Liz), I think he was at times stretching his ability to sing back-up vocals for Liz. This was a minor quibble, as most of his back up was unnecessary, and it seemed he is working to make it better. I dont know much more to say other than if you like Liz (or dont like her new direction), you HAVE to see her live. Shes at the top of her game in every aspect live: musically, vocally, stage presence, ability to play her entire catalogue, etc. If I had one wish, it would be to combine this acoustic Liz experience with the Rockin Liz experience. If she had a capable band that could play any song from her repertoire in small venues, I couldnt ask for anything more. Bottom line: GO SEE LIZ LIVE!!!
