Don't hit me - I know I am selling out those of you who prefer to muck around in your angst over the "lost" Liz. Me - I enjoy that she sounds great, she is loose and funny on stage, and all her songs hold up - even the recent ones. I even liked the 3 new tunes (and one that won't be on the CD - it should be) - Liz' music always has reflected her own view of the world at whatever age she is in - and sorry, but people in their 30s are less edgy-angst ridden and more reflective. Wasn't that the point of Rock Me, for instance - she was getting off on a temporary return to her college/early 20 days, with this lucky boy she picked up - but she knows in the back of her mind she doesn't belong there anymore. Before, she slapped around the girls she saw who were using the boys for their money while knowing they might be on to something - now she is ! more likely to look at a couple and wonder if she will ever feel that kind of love. Anyway, she looked great, she sounded amazing, her guitar work was excellent, and she looks to be pretty much into that Dino guy (in the dictionary next to "Lucky Bastard" is his picture). And her play with the audience was more than returned. Good show - going to see her again tonite - give it a shot. And try to get off the "she sold us out" gripe - she is still doing something completely unique - and oh yeah, sounds good too. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 06:40:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Gabriel Peterson Subject: [support-system] Boston 7/26 I headed to Liz's concert last night with the exact mindset as Eric wrote yesterday but ended up being blown away. I hadn't seen her since her first tour (twelve years a go?) and figured this would be a nice end to my connection. I figure someone else will do a better rundown of the whole concert (I get this in digest so I don't know what else has been said) but she played for about an hour and a half. It was just her and Dino (or whatever his name is) which ended up working out well. Her guitar playing wasn't amazing so having him to do the tougher riffs and add a little was perfect so that she could do the simpler stuff and still have it sound rich. She was perfectly relaxed and the crowd was really into it. She played three new songs and they sounded good but so did the stuff off of her last album since it wasn't bogged down with synth, etc. Someone mentioned her wearing an ugly pair of cut-offs and I'd expect them to return because she wore a skirt last night but was not very womanly on the barstool so she was flashing the crowd the entire night despite her attempts to rearrange. She also mentioned at one point that they were recording for a podcast. I can't imagine it would be the whole show but that would be amazing, it will probably be a couple cuts but that will be good. She played a number of songs of Exile and was open to playing what people yelled out so that was a pleasant surprise. Anyway, try to go if you can because it was a great show....second only to when I saw the Pixies last year ;) > Date: Tue, 26 Jul 2005 09:01:14 -0400 > From: "Eric Ginsburg" > Subject: [support-system] RE: lollapalooza reviewza > -was anyone else there? > > From: lilrussiangirl@aol.com > >Subject: [support-system] lollapalooza reviewza > -was anyone else there? > > >So- is it better to be "heard of" by loads of > people for WCI - played in > >movies, at Bennigans and baseball stadiums, or > respected and loved by a > >smaller group of fans and your artistic peers? > > > >Could she fix things now even if she wanted to? > > > > Well said. He was stoned out of his mind, and was flipping out and playing air drums backstage for half the bands at Lollapalooza. I took a picture because it was just so bizarre. Who the hell WAS that?" That sounds a lot like Beatle Bob. He lives in St. Louis, has a radio show, I think, but his main gig is going to shows all over the country. He's in his 50s, at least, but he has a Beatle haircut and is famous for his enthusiastic air-punching dancing. I last saw him at the final Guided by Voices shows in Chicago. I also saw him at Bonnaroo once, wearing his blazer in the 90+ degree heat. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 13:23:22 -0400 From: "M.C. Edited from a post I sent about a month ago to this list, in answer to a similar question: The Birchmere has two rooms, one which they use most often (which is seated), and another, bigger one called "The Bandstand", which are sometimes seated and sometimes standing room. The Phair show doesn't seem to be advertised as a Bandstand show, so it's going to be in the regular room. In other words, it will be a seated show. HOWEVER. It's not seated like a theatre, it's seated in tables, which means that some of the seats are set up to have your back to the stage. That's never been a problem for me, because you can always turn your chair around, and to be honest, I've never had a bad seat there. The other thing is: the Birchmere sells dinner too (the food is decent but generic and generally costs in the $10-$15 range), so if you're really concerned about seats, go right when the doors open and kill time by eating dinner or dessert. The Birchmere is not metro-accessible, but it does have a huge parking lot. Any other questions, feel free to ask! I don't remember the set list exactly or everyone she played but here are some of the songs she did: Somebody's Miracle: Somebody's Miracle Everything To Me Lost Tonight Liz Phair: Extraordinary Why Can't I Rock Me HWC (her singing only about few seconds of the song) Good Love Never Dies whitechocolatespaceegg: Polyester Bride Uncle Alvarez Whip-Smart: Supernova Exile In Guyville: 6'1" Girls! Soap Star Joe Mesmerizing Divorce Song Stratford-On-Guy Fuck & Run Rare/B-Sides: Closer To You Wild Thing Turning Japanese (only her singing) She mentioned that "Closer To You" was a new song that didn't make it on the album. She also was listening to suggestions on what the crowd would like to hear & some people mentioned songs like "Shatter", "Hurricane Cindy", "Little Digger" & "White Bird Of Texas". "Jeremy Engle" was one of the songs she wanted to play & learned it after much request she gotten from the audience from her last tour. -cana- ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V8 #84 ***********************************
